King James wording
King James Version
Nevertheless divers of Asher and Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves, and came to Jerusalem.THE KEY
Their humbling is not the destination; it is the opening that lets them come toward wholeness.
THE MEANING
The verse gives you a movement to recognize now: resistance can soften, and approach to wholeness can begin. Humility lowers what resists, and the paired action is coming to Jerusalem. Yerushalayim carries the sound of shalom, wholeness, so the movement is toward a place named for what is being approached.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that you must already be fully receptive before you can move toward wholeness: here, the humbling itself is part of coming.
THE ROOT
וַיַּכְנִיעוּ
vayakhniʿu
GROWS FROM
כנע
To be brought low or subdued; in the causative, to humble or subdue.
“bent low” in this verse is vayakhniʿu. The root holds both being brought low and the act of lowering or submitting. Here, humility becomes visible as movement: they humble themselves, and they come.
ALSO GROWS
nikhnaʿ: Was humbled; submitted.
נִכְנַע
This form shows the state of being brought low that the verse names as humility.
hikhniʿa: Humbled; subdued; brought low.
הִכְנִיעַ
This causative form shares the verse’s root and carries the motion of yielding that precedes their coming.
יְרוּשָׁלַ
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
To be whole, complete, or intact.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. The destination carries the language of shalom: wholeness. The verse joins a lowered posture with movement toward that wholeness.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness; completeness.
שָׁלוֹם
This is the wholeness carried in the name Yerushalayim, toward which the humbled ones come.
shalem: Whole; complete; intact.
שָׁלֵם
This branch shows the root’s sense of being made whole that sounds within the destination’s name.
THE PATTERN
When resistance yields, humility opens a path toward restoration.
If my people, upon whom my name is called, bend themselves low, and pray, and seek my face, and turn back from their harmful ways, then I will hear from the heavens, and I will release their falling short, and heal their land. The slaughtered offerings of God are a broken breath; a broken and crushed heart, O God, you do not despise.Be made low before the face of the LORD, and he will lift you up.THE THREAD
If my people, upon whom my name is called, bend themselves low, and pray, and seek my face, and turn back from their harmful ways, then I will hear from the heavens, and I will release their falling short, and heal their land. This verse uses the same כנע (kanaʿ) root in “humble themselves,” so the connection is carried by the word itself. In both verses, being lowered opens movement toward restoration.
