King James wording
King James Version
And his servants conspired against him, and slew him in his own house.THE KEY
The word translated “conspired” pictures the servants binding themselves together against the man they serve, and that bond ends in blood inside his own house.
THE MEANING
The verse names a present vulnerability: being surrounded by people who serve you does not guarantee safety from them. A close circle can bind itself against the person at its center, and home can become the place of killing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that one’s household is necessarily a place of safety, or that those serving nearby are therefore loyal.
THE ROOT
וַיִּקְשְׁרוּ
wayyiqshoru
GROWS FROM
קשר
q-sh-r
To tie or bind; here, to join together in a plot.
“bound themselves together” in this verse is wayyiqshoru. The Hebrew makes conspiracy a kind of binding: the servants join themselves together against their master. The same root can describe binding words close to oneself, so the root reveals a joining whose meaning depends on what it binds people to.
ALSO GROWS
qesher: A bond, league, or conspiracy.
קֶשֶׁר
This noun names the compact formed by people bound together in a secret plot.
uqshartam: You shall bind them, as in Deuteronomy 6:8.
וּקְשַׁרְתָּם
The same root describes binding words as a sign to oneself; here, people bind themselves into opposition.
עֲבָדָיו
avadav
GROWS FROM
עבד
ʿ-b-d
To work or serve.
“servants” in this verse is avadav. The people named by the root of service are the ones who turn against the one they serve. The word carries their assigned relationship into the scene, making their betrayal part of the verse’s structure.
ALSO GROWS
eved: A servant or worker.
עֶבֶד
This is the role named in the verse; the word’s service does not guarantee loyalty.
avodah: Service or labor.
עֲבֹדָה
The same root frames the servants through their work, even as their actions break from that role.
THE PATTERN
People within a close circle can bind themselves against the person at its center.
And his servants rose and bound themselves together against him, and struck Joash down in the house of Millo, which goes down to Silla. But you are a man set in line beside me, my familiar one, and the one I know. And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to hand him over to them.THE THREAD
And Shallum son of Jabesh bound together against him, and struck him before the people, and killed him, and reigned in his place. The Hebrew uses the same root, קשר (q-sh-r, to bind), for “conspired” in both verses. In each, the plot’s binding together comes before the killing, making the hidden joining visible in the violence that follows.
