This verse in the King James

King James wording
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

The Hebrew for “seek” means to inquire, so Josiah’s search is not vague devotion: it becomes the clearing of what occupies the land.

You can begin turning toward God before you feel fully formed; Josiah begins while still young. That search reaches beyond private thought: what fills Judah (⁨יְהוּדָה⁩, Yehudah, “praise”) and Jerusalem (⁨יְרוּשָׁלַיִם⁩, Yerushalayim, “the two wholenesses”) is also brought into the work of clearing.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A real beginning has to wait until you are fully mature.

לִדְרֹשׁ

lidrosh

GROWS FROM

דרש

to seek, inquire, or search out

“seek” in this verse is lidrosh. This is active inquiry, not a passing wish. The verse’s sequence makes the search visible: Josiah turns toward God, and what occupies the land begins to be cleared.

ALSO GROWS

midrash: inquiry or exposition arising from inquiry

מִדְרָשׁ

This branch preserves the searching, questioning quality inside the word translated “seek.”

derishah: inquiry or demand

דְּרִישָׁה

It shows that seeking can be sustained attention directed toward what is being sought.

לְטַהֵר

letaher

GROWS FROM

טהר

to be clean or pure; to cleanse

“cleanse” in this verse is letaher. The action rendered “purge” is framed as making clean. Its reach into Judah and Jerusalem brings the verse’s movement toward praise and wholeness into the public landscape.

ALSO GROWS

tahor: clean, pure

טָהוֹר

The adjective names the condition toward which the act of cleansing moves.

taharah: cleanness or purification

טָהֳרָה

This noun makes the process itself visible: the land is being cleared toward a clean condition.

דָּוִד

David

GROWS FROM

דוד

beloved; beloved one

David’s name carries the sense of belovedness. “The God of David his father” therefore holds both family continuity and the nature compressed into David’s name.

ALSO GROWS

dod: beloved or loved one

דּוֹד

This root word carries the belovedness present in David’s name.

dodi: my beloved

דּוֹדִי

This intimate form makes the root’s relational quality clear.

A turn toward God becomes visible as rival objects and practices are removed.

And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If you turn back to the LORD with all your hearts, then turn aside the foreign gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and set your hearts firm toward the LORD, and serve him alone; and he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.
1 Samuel 7:3 · SDVReturning to the LORD is joined directly to putting away the gods that had occupied the people’s devotion.
Many of those who had practiced the meddling arts also brought their scrolls together and burned them before all people; and they counted the price, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Acts 19:19 · SDVThe turn described in the surrounding passage becomes visible in the public destruction of objects tied to the former practice.
But when they turned to the LORD God of Israel in their narrow place, and sought him, he was found by them.
2 Chronicles 15:4 · SDV

The word translated “sought” comes from the same Hebrew root, ⁨דרש⁩, as Josiah’s “seek.” Here, seeking is a turn that meets a response; in Josiah’s verse, that turn also becomes visible in what is cleared.
