King James wording
King James Version
And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.THE KEY
The same Hebrew root names Josiah’s removal of the abominations and the people’s refusal to turn away, making reform and continued allegiance mirror movements.
THE MEANING
Here, devotion is communal and enacted: Josiah removes the abominations and makes everyone present in Israel serve the LORD. The verse states the limit of the people’s constancy plainly: it holds for all his days.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that outward reform guarantees lasting loyalty: the verse names their steadiness only for “all his days.”
THE ROOT
וַיָּסַר
vayasar
GROWS FROM
סור
Turn aside, depart; in a causative form, turn something away or remove it.
“did not turn aside” in this verse is vayasar. The verse uses the same root when Josiah removes the abominations and when the people do not depart from following the LORD. English gives these actions separate words, while Hebrew links clearing away what competes for allegiance with refusing to turn away from the LORD.
ALSO GROWS
vayasar: And he removed, or turned away.
וַיָּסַר
Josiah turns the abominations away from the lands of Israel.
saru: They turned aside or departed.
סָרוּ
The people do not turn aside from following the LORD; the same root describes the opposite movement.
THE PATTERN
Renewed allegiance takes visible shape when rival powers are put away and people serve the living God.
Now therefore stand in awe of the LORD, and serve him in wholeness and in truth. Turn aside the gods your fathers served beyond the river and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If you turn back to the LORD with all your hearts, then turn aside the foreign gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and set your hearts firm toward the LORD, and serve him alone; and he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines. For they themselves report concerning us what sort of entry we had to you, and how you turned around to God from the idols, to serve the living and true God.THE THREAD
Therefore you shall guard to do as the LORD your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. The same root, סור (sur), appears in “turn aside” here and “departed not” in Chronicles. Deuteronomy names the refusal to veer from the path; Chronicles mirrors it with Josiah turning the abominations away.
