King James wording
King James Version
And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:THE KEY
The ark does not stop at the threshold: the verse carries the covenant into the house’s innermost chamber, a place marked by doubled set-apartness.
THE MEANING
The verse shows what is bound in covenant being carried all the way to the center, beneath the cherubim’s wings. The sacred has an appointed place at the heart of the house.
THE ROOT
קֹדֶשׁ
qodesh
GROWS FROM
קדש
To set apart, consecrate.
“most set-apart place” in this verse is qodesh. The verse calls the innermost chamber the “holy of holies,” repeating the root for set-apartness. The repetition makes this more than a room inside a house: it is a space set apart within what is already set apart.
ALSO GROWS
qadosh: Set apart; holy.
קָדוֹשׁ
The same root describes the quality of the chamber where the ark is placed.
qiddesh: Set apart; consecrated.
קִדֵּשׁ
This verb shows the root as an act of making something distinct, which illuminates the chamber’s dedicated place within the house.
miqdash: Sanctuary; a set-apart place.
מִקְדָּשׁ
The sanctuary shares the root of the innermost chamber, showing set-apartness as the organizing idea of the whole dwelling.
מָקוֹם
maqom
GROWS FROM
קום
To rise, stand, or be established.
The word translated “place” grows from the root for standing or rising. The ark is brought to its maqom, its appointed standing-place, before it is carried farther inward to the set-apart center.
ALSO GROWS
qum: To rise or stand.
קוּם
This verb reveals the root beneath “place”: a place is where something stands.
qam: He rose or stood.
קָם
This form shows the root as taking a position, echoing the ark’s arrival at its appointed place.
heqim: He raised or established.
הֵקִים
This form extends the idea from standing to establishing, illuminating the place prepared for the ark within the house.
THE PATTERN
The sacred dwelling is pictured as a prepared center where divine presence meets the human.
And there I meet with you, and I speak with you from above the covering, from between the two cherubim that are upon the ark of the witness, all that I command you to the children of Israel. We will go into his dwelling places; we will bow down at his footstool. And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth.THE THREAD
And he was struck with awe, and said, How awe-filled is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of the heavens. Both verses use מָקוֹם (maqom, place), from קום (qum, rise or stand). Genesis names the place as God’s house and heaven’s gate; here, the ark is carried to its appointed place within the house.
