King James wording
King James Version
Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.THE KEY
What you do for the beloved is measured by what it builds in them, while your speech remains before God.
THE MEANING
When you feel pressed to justify your motives, this verse places speech before God in Christ. It measures action by whether it builds up the people held as beloved. The center shifts from winning acquittal to strengthening another’s life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that your work exists to win acquittal from other people: its stated aim is their building up.
THE ROOT
οἰκοδομήν
oikodomēn
GROWS FROM
οἰκοδομ- (οἶκος + δέμω)
House-building: constructing a dwelling, and by extension building up.
“building up” in this verse is oikodomēn. The Greek word carries the image of a house being built, not just vague encouragement. The beloved are pictured as a structure whose strengthening is the intended outcome of every action.
ALSO GROWS
oikodomeō: To build a house; to build up.
οἰκοδομέω
This verb turns the image of a house into an ongoing act of construction, showing that the beloved’s strengthening is active work.
oikodomos: Builder, house-builder.
οἰκοδόμος
This branch makes the building image concrete: the verse’s purpose is directed toward what is being built in the beloved.
THE PATTERN
Words and actions find their purpose in building up others and establishing a life that can stand.
Through wisdom a house is built, and through discernment it is set firm.So also you, since you burn for gifts of breath, seek that you may overflow for the building up of the assembly. So then let us pursue the things that move toward wholeness, and the things that build one another up.THE THREAD
Let no rotten word come out of your mouth, but whatever is good for building up where there is need, that it may give favor to those who hear. The same Greek word family appears here as “edifying”: speech is measured by what it builds in those who hear. The image opens this verse further, the work aimed at the beloved takes shape through what reaches them.
