What Does 2 Corinthians 5:16 Mean?
So from now on we know no one by the flesh. Even though we have known the Anointed One by the flesh, now we no longer know him so.

King James wording
King James Version
Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.THE KEY
The verse does not erase flesh; it removes flesh as the final measure of knowing anyone, even the Anointed One.
THE MEANING
No person is exhausted by visible form, bodily condition, or ordinary human measure. The Anointed One is known beyond visible flesh; what can be seen is real, but it does not contain the whole of who he is.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that Christ can be truly known only through physical sight, or that any person can be reduced to visible condition, status, or category.
THE ROOT
οἴδαμεν
oidamen
GROWS FROM
εἰδ-
eid-
To see; the form οἴδαμεν means to know or be aware.
Greek uses οἴδαμεν (oidamen, we know or are aware) for “know we no man”; this belongs to the see-and-know family, whose relatives include εἶδος (eidos, form or appearance). That link gives “after the flesh” an echo of visible form, while the sentence remains about how a person is known, not merely a play on words.
ALSO GROWS
eidos: A visible form, shape, or appearance.
εἶδος
Its connection to seeing and knowing gives added texture to the verse’s refusal to make visible form the measure of a person.
idea: An appearance, form, or visible aspect.
ἰδέα
This related word preserves the family’s link between perception and form, a link the English “know” does not show.
γινώσκομεν
ginōskomen
GROWS FROM
γινωσκ-
ginōsk-
To know, recognize, or come to know.
The earlier “we have known” is ἐγνώκαμεν (egnōkamen, we have known), and “we know” is γινώσκομεν (ginōskomen, we know): both belong to the same verb family. The shift is in the way the Anointed One is known, not in whether he is real or remembered.
ALSO GROWS
gnōsis: Knowledge or knowing.
γνῶσις
The noun keeps the focus on knowing as an unfolding recognition, rather than simply possessing a label or fact.
gnōstos: Known or familiar.
γνωστός
This related form shows the same root reaching from the act of knowing to what has become known.
σάρκα
sarka
GROWS FROM
σαρκ-
sark-
Flesh; the body as flesh and, by extension, embodied human life.
The repeated phrase κατὰ σάρκα (kata sarka, according to flesh) names a frame or measure of knowing. Flesh remains real, but it no longer contains the whole of who a person is, or how the Anointed One is known.
ALSO GROWS
sarkikos: Pertaining to or characterized by flesh.
σαρκικός
It shows the root describing a mode or orientation, helping the phrase read as a way of seeing rather than only a reference to a body.
sarkinos: Fleshy or composed of flesh.
σάρκινος
It keeps the concrete bodily sense in view while the verse distinguishes bodily reality from the full measure of knowing.
THE PATTERN
Visible form and present perception do not exhaust what can be known of a person or of the Anointed One.
But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have pushed him away. The LORD does not see as the human sees. The human sees what is outside, but the LORD sees the heart.Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have perceived me, you have leaned your full weight. Flourishing are those who have not perceived, and yet have leaned their weight. For now we see through a mirror, in a riddle; but then face to face. Now I know in pieces; but then I shall know wholly, even as I was known.THE THREAD
For now we see through a mirror, in a riddle; but then face to face. Now I know in pieces; but then I shall know wholly, even as I was known.“I know” and “shall I know” use the γινώσκω (ginōskō, know or recognize) word family found in this verse. That shared root opens “now henceforth” as a changed horizon of knowing: the Anointed One is no longer known within the limit of visible flesh, while knowing still exceeds what is presently seen.
