This verse in the King James

King James wording
I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.

Truthful speech does not have to cast you out of the heart speaking it.

Here, hard words coexist with belonging: a person is not reduced to the rebuke they hear. The heart holds the other through the whole span named, dying and living, so closeness does not depend on comfort.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A hard word means I have been rejected. This verse holds speech and belonging together: condemnation is not the only meaning of frankness.

καρδίαις

kardiais

GROWS FROM

καρδία

kardia

Heart; the inward center of a person, including thought and desire, not emotion alone.

English “heart” can sound like emotion alone, but ⁨καρδία⁩ names the inward center in which a person is held. Greek compounds use this same word for the knower of hearts and for hardness of heart: the inner life can be known, opened, or hardened. Here, being “in our hearts” means being carried within the speaker’s inward life, even across “to die and live” together.

ALSO GROWS

kardiognōstēs: Knower of hearts.

καρδιογνώστης

This compound treats the heart as the knowable inward person, more than a container for passing emotion.

sklērokardia: Hardness of heart.

σκληροκαρδία

The same heart-word can name an interior that has hardened; here, the speaker instead places the others within the heart and denies condemnation.

Love becomes visible by remaining joined to another across the vulnerability of life.

And it came to pass, when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the living soul of Jonathan was bound to David's, and Jonathan loved him as his own living soul.
1 Samuel 18:1 · SDVJonathan’s bond is pictured as two inner lives knit together, echoing the shared belonging expressed here.
Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
Romans 12:15 · SDVLove stays joined through another’s changing experience, sharing both joy and grief.
No one has greater love than this, that someone lay down his living soul for his friends.
John 15:13 · SDVLove’s bond reaches even to the willingness to share the cost of another’s life.
O Corinthians, our mouth is open toward you, our heart is widened.
2 Corinthians 6:11 · SDV

The same heart in which the Corinthians are held is described as enlarged. Together, the verses show an inward space that can open wider while speech remains direct.
