What Does 2 John 1:9 Mean?
Everyone who goes ahead and does not remain in the teaching of the Anointed One does not hold God. The one who remains in the teaching holds both the Father and the Son.

King James wording
King James Version
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.THE KEY
The verse’s hidden hinge is movement: one person goes ahead beyond the teaching, while the one who stays within it has both the Father and the Son.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks now: moving beyond the Anointed One’s teaching leaves a person without God; remaining in that teaching means having both the Father and the Son. The difference is the place a person continues to inhabit.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie: “I can leave the Anointed One’s teaching behind and still have God on my own terms.”
THE ROOT
προάγων
proagōn
GROWS FROM
ἄγω
agō
to lead, bring, or go
“goes ahead” in this verse is proagōn. The KJV’s “transgresseth” carries a directional image: this person goes forward beyond. Beside “abideth,” that movement becomes part of the verse’s architecture: the question is where a person is moving in relation to the teaching.
ALSO GROWS
agōgē: a leading, conduct, or way of life
ἀγωγή
This branch gives going the shape of a course or conduct, echoing the direction in the verse.
synagōgē: a gathering or assembly
συναγωγή
The same root can describe being brought together, showing how the surrounding prefix shapes the direction of the movement.
μένων
menōn
GROWS FROM
μένω
menō
to remain, stay, or continue
“does not remain” in this verse is menōn. This word carries the sense of continuing in a place. The verse locates having the Father and the Son in this ongoing dwelling within the teaching.
ALSO GROWS
emmenō: to remain in or persist
ἐμμένω
This form makes the sense of continuing within something explicit.
monē: a dwelling place or abode
μονή
This related word gives remaining the image of a settled dwelling.
διδαχῇ
didachē
GROWS FROM
διδάσκω
didaskō
to teach or instruct
The word translated “doctrine” names what is taught: instruction with a teacher behind it. That makes abiding here an ongoing relationship with the Anointed One’s teaching.
ALSO GROWS
didaskalia: teaching or instruction
διδασκαλία
This branch names the instruction itself, the teaching in which the verse describes a person remaining.
didaskalos: a teacher
διδάσκαλος
This branch names the one who teaches, keeping the instruction connected to its source.
THE PATTERN
Relationship with God is sustained as received words remain within and shape a person’s life.
I store your word in my heart, so that I do not miss the mark against you.Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it stays in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.So let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning stays in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.THE THREAD
So let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning stays in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. The same verb translated “abideth” here appears twice as “abide” and “remain” in 1 John 2:24. That verse explicitly joins the message remaining in the reader to continuing in both the Son and the Father, opening the final clause here.
