King James wording
King James Version
And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much.THE KEY
Jehu’s promise to serve Baal “much” is a lure: devotion can be performed as camouflage for violence.
THE MEANING
A pledge of greater service can win trust while drawing people into the reach of a concealed intention. Jehu’s words sound like allegiance, yet they set up the destruction of those he gathers.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that a stronger pledge proves shared allegiance; here, the promise of devotion conceals a violent plan.
THE ROOT
עָבַד
avad
GROWS FROM
עבד
To work, labor, or serve.
“served; will serve” in this verse is avad. The Hebrew repeats the same root for Ahab’s service and Jehu’s promised service, making the boast sound like a simple increase in labor given to the same master. The root carries work and service together, so the claim is about where a person’s effort is pledged, and the verse shows that a pledge can be a performance.
ALSO GROWS
eved: Servant or worker.
עֶבֶד
The servant is defined by the work and allegiance given to a master, sharpening the weight of Jehu’s claim.
avodah: Work, labor, or service.
עֲבוֹדָה
This branch holds ordinary labor and religious service in one word-family, so the verse’s promise of worship is also a claim about where effort will go.
הַבַּעַל
ha-Baʿal
GROWS FROM
בעל
To own, be master, or take as husband.
Baal is also a Hebrew word for a master or husband, carrying the sense of one who possesses or has authority. The phrase “serve Baal” thus joins service to a named master, while Jehu’s false claim exposes how easily the language of allegiance can disguise another purpose.
ALSO GROWS
baʿal: Master, owner, or husband.
בַּעַל
The title makes the object of service sound like a personal authority, not an abstract practice.
beʿulah: A married woman.
בְּעוּלָה
This related form preserves the root’s marital sense of belonging or being joined, adding the dimension of relationship to the language of mastery.
THE PATTERN
A display of allegiance can mask an intention that the same display helps carry out.
Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be missing, for I have a great slaughtered offering to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live. But Jehu did it by deceit, to the end that he might destroy the servants of Baal.He who hates makes himself a stranger with his lips, and lays deceit within him.Watch for false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inside they are snatching wolves.THE THREAD
You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do as their works do. But you shall tear them down and shatter their standing stones.“Serve” in both verses comes from עבד (avad), meaning to work or serve. Exodus names service to other gods as an allegiance enacted through what one does; Jehu’s claim shows that spoken allegiance can be a mask, while the true intention is disclosed by the work it sets in motion.
