King James wording
King James Version
And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.THE KEY
The Hebrew verb for the guards’ standing shares its root with “pillar,” so their watch becomes a human support built around the king.
THE MEANING
The king’s safety is held by an armed ring of watchers, each stationed from one side of the temple to the other. Protection takes shape as a boundary around the center, with altar and temple marking the space that boundary holds.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעַמְדוּ
wayyaʿamdu
GROWS FROM
ע-מ-ד
ʿ-m-d
To stand or take one’s station.
“stood” in this verse is wayyaʿamdu. The verb for the guards’ standing comes from ע-מ-ד (ʿ-m-d). A related word, עַמּוּד (ʿammûd), means “pillar”: standing can also be what holds a structure in place. The guards’ watch is a position made tangible around the king.
ALSO GROWS
ʿammûd: Pillar, column.
עַמּוּד
This branch shows how the guards’ standing can be pictured as support holding the king’s protected space.
maʿămād: Station, position, or standing place.
מַעֲמָד
The guards occupy a defined position; their protection depends on being stationed around the center.
THE PATTERN
A center is guarded by a boundary of bodies or presence deliberately stationed around it.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people, from now to the ages. For I, says the LORD, will be to her a wall of fire all around, and I will be the weight in the midst of her.And all the messengers stand in a circle about the throne, and about the elders and the four living creatures, and they fall before the throne upon their faces and bow down to God,THE THREAD
A Song of degrees. Behold, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, standing in the house of the LORD through the nights.Psalm 134:1 uses the same root, ע-מ-ד (ʿ-m-d), for those who stand in the LORD’s house by night. The root connects the guards’ stationed watch around the king with standing as an ongoing presence in the temple.
