King James wording
King James Version
And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and smote him before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead.THE KEY
The word translated “conspired” means “bound together,” so the verse reveals a throne changing hands through a bond that ends in public bloodshed.
THE MEANING
Here a conspiracy is not merely private agreement: it binds Shallum to the act that kills the king. The king is struck before the people, killed, and replaced by the man who strikes him. Authority changes hands in the same moment violence becomes public.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A change of ruler does not by itself mean a rightful or peaceful transfer of power; this reign begins with conspiracy and a killing.
THE ROOT
וַיִּקְשֹׁר
wayyiqshor
GROWS FROM
ק-ש-ר
q-sh-r
To bind or tie together.
“bound together against” in this verse is wayyiqshor. English calls it conspiracy, while Hebrew uses the root for binding: the plot is pictured as people fastening themselves together against another. The verse shows that bond becoming public violence.
ALSO GROWS
qashar: To bind or tie.
קָשַׁר
This basic verb reveals the binding image beneath the political plot.
qesher: A bond; a conspiracy.
קֶשֶׁר
The related noun names the plot as a bond formed among conspirators.
שַׁלּוּם
Shallum
GROWS FROM
ש-ל-ם
sh-l-m
To be whole or complete; to make good or repay what is owed.
Shallum’s name comes from the root also heard in words for wholeness and repayment. It sits in tension with this scene: his reign opens through killing, while his name bears the language of making whole or settling what is owed.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness; peace.
שָׁלוֹם
This branch carries the root’s sense of completeness, sharply contrasted with the violence of the accession.
shillem: To repay or make restitution.
שִׁלֵּם
This branch carries the root’s sense of repaying what is owed, also present in the meaning associated with Shallum’s name.
THE PATTERN
A ruler’s killing can make succession a direct transfer of power to the killer or to those who seize the opening.
And Zimri went in and struck him down, and put him to death, in the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his place. For Menahem son of Gadi went up from Tirzah and came to Samaria, and struck Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria, and killed him, and reigned in his place. But the people of the land struck down all who had bound themselves together against king Amon, and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead.THE THREAD
And the servants of Amon bound themselves together against him, and struck down the king in his own house. The word translated “conspired” here is the same Hebrew verb, קָשַׁר (qashar, “bind or tie”), used in the verse about Shallum. Its recurrence preserves the hidden image: the plot is a binding that culminates in a king’s death, now inside another royal household.
