This verse in the King James

King James wording
Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:

The silver moves from the people through watchful hands into the LORD’s house, where its account is brought to completion.

What is entrusted to the LORD’s house is gathered from the people, guarded at the doorway, and brought into a complete account. Its path remains visible, from those who give it to those who watch over it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the idea that what is given to sacred work passes beyond scrutiny: the verse names its source, its keepers, and the act of summing it.

וְיַתֵּם

veyattem

GROWS FROM

תמם

Make complete; finish; bring to completion.

“count out” in this verse is veyattem. The verb behind “sum” carries the sense of making complete. The silver is not merely present in the house; its accounting is brought to completion, so the gathered gift has a clear measure.

ALSO GROWS

tamim: Complete, whole; blameless.

תָּמִים

The same root links completing an account with wholeness: nothing is left uncounted.

tom: Integrity, completeness.

תֹּם

This branch brings out the integrity implied when what is gathered can be fully accounted for.

שֹׁמְרֵי

shomrei

GROWS FROM

שׁמר

Guard; watch over; keep.

“Keepers” are literally watchers: the root ⁨שׁמר⁩ describes active guarding. At the threshold, their watch marks the passage of the people’s silver into the house as something protected and accountable.

ALSO GROWS

mishmar: A guard, watch, or guard post.

מִשְׁמָר

The word shows that keeping can name a watchful post, like the keepers stationed at the door.

mishmeret: A charge, duty, or watch.

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This branch makes the keepers’ role a watch they are entrusted to carry out.

אָסְפוּ

asfu

GROWS FROM

אסף

Gather; collect; bring in.

The silver comes from the people and is gathered into common use; the root keeps that shared origin in view. It connects the collection to the wider image of an ingathering, something brought in from many sources.

ALSO GROWS

asif: Ingathering; harvest.

אָסִיף

A harvest is gathered in from many places, like the silver collected from the people.

asuppah: Assembly; gathering.

אֲסֻפָּה

This branch links gathering material resources with bringing people together.

What is entrusted for shared sacred work is gathered and handled in ways that remain visible and accountable.

And the silver of those counted in the assembly was one hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and threescore and fifteen shekels, by the shekel of the set-apart place.
Exodus 38:25 · SDVThe silver is counted and its total stated, making the gathered contribution visible.
Moreover, it is sought among portioners that someone be found steady.
1 Corinthians 4:2 · SDVThe verse names faithfulness as the measure of those entrusted with what belongs to others.
Looking ahead to what is beautiful, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of people.
2 Corinthians 8:21 · SDVThe handling of shared resources is kept open to view before God and people.
And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.
Genesis 2:15 · SDV

The Hebrew verb rendered “keep” in Genesis 2:15 is ⁨שָׁמַר⁩ (shamar), the same root in “keepers” here. In both verses, keeping means active watch over what has been entrusted to care.
