King James wording
King James Version
And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, ruler.THE KEY
The Hebrew uses one root for both the people who remain and Nebuchadnezzar’s act of leaving them: the remnant is what survives as what a conqueror leaves behind.
THE MEANING
A people can remain on their ground while an outside power still chooses who governs them. Survival preserves a people, but by itself it does not restore their self-rule.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that surviving a collapse means control has returned is undone: the people remain, yet their ruler is still chosen by Babylon.
THE ROOT
הַנִּשְׁאָר
hannish'ar
GROWS FROM
שאר
sha'ar
Remain, be left over, survive as what is left.
“remained” in this verse is hannish'ar. The verse uses this root twice: the people are the ones remaining, and Nebuchadnezzar is the one who left them there. Hebrew brings the survivors and the conqueror’s act into one verbal picture: a remnant is what remains because someone has left it.
ALSO GROWS
she'ar: Remainder, what is left.
שְׁאָר
It makes the people in the verse legible as a remainder after devastation.
she'erit: Remnant, surviving remainder.
שְׁאֵרִית
This is the language used elsewhere for the small portion of a people that persists after loss.
וַיַּפְקֵד
vayyafqed
GROWS FROM
פקד
paqad
Attend to, muster, assign, or appoint to oversight.
“over them he set” in this verse is vayyafqed. The Hebrew verb describes appointing someone over the people. The survivors remain in place, but authority over them is deliberately assigned; survival and outside rule occupy the same sentence.
ALSO GROWS
paqīd: An appointed officer or overseer.
פָּקִיד
It carries the same root into the person assigned responsibility over others.
pequddah: Oversight, charge, or appointment.
פְּקֻדָּה
It reveals the administrative force behind the act of placing a ruler over the people.
גְּדַלְיָהוּ
Gedalyahu
GROWS FROM
גדל
gadal
Grow, become great, or make great; the name element יהו (Yahu, a form of the divine name) gives the name the sense “YHWH has made great.”
Gedaliah’s name carries the meaning “YHWH has made great.” That name stands beside an appointment made by Babylon, leaving the tension between divine greatness and imperial rule visible in the verse.
ALSO GROWS
gadol: Great, large.
גָּדוֹל
It shows the root’s quality of greatness in a descriptive form.
higdil: Make great, magnify.
הִגְדִּיל
It carries the root’s sense of becoming great into the action embedded in Gedaliah’s name.
THE PATTERN
A remnant carries a people’s continuity through devastation without undoing the loss or necessarily restoring self-rule.
And the remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. And now for a little while favor has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to slip free, and to give us a peg in his set-apart place, so that our God may light up our eyes, and give us a little living in our bondage. So also now, in this present season, there is a remnant left behind, picked out by favor.THE THREAD
But the chief of the slaughterers left some of the emptied ones of the land to be vinedressers and tillers. The same root שאר (sha’ar, remain or leave over) lies behind “left” here and “remained” in 25:22. This earlier verse says the poor are left to work the land; the later one shows those who remain placed under a governor, joining survival to the power governing the survivors.
