This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.

The word translated “saved” belongs to the root for guarding: here, protection takes the form of watchfulness repeated.

A warning makes danger visible while there is still room to move. The king is preserved repeatedly by the information that shows where the threat lies. The verse presents attentiveness as one shape protection takes now.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Protection does not always mean danger never comes near; sometimes it means being shown where danger is and kept clear of it repeatedly.

וְנִשְׁמַר

venishmar

GROWS FROM

שׁמר

sh-m-r

Keep, watch, guard.

“guarded himself” in this verse is venishmar. The Hebrew form ⁨וְנִשְׁמַר⁩ comes from shamar, the root of keeping watch and guarding. The same word-family can name a watchman and a guard duty, joining warning, vigilance, and preservation in one root.

ALSO GROWS

shamar: To guard, watch, or keep.

שָׁמַר

This is the root verb behind the king’s preservation: being kept safe is closely bound to guarding against the known danger.

shomer: A keeper or watchman.

שֹׁמֵר

The watchman stays alert to danger; the king’s repeated safety likewise follows from information that lets him remain watchful.

mishmeret: A guard, watch, or charge to keep.

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

The word can describe an ongoing responsibility to watch, echoing the verse’s “not once nor twice.”

A warning can become protection when it is received and acted on with continued watchfulness.

The shrewd one sees evil and hides himself; the open ones cross over and are punished.
Proverbs 22:3 · SDVThe danger is seen in time, and foresight becomes shelter.
The LORD watches over you from all harm; he watches over your living soul.
Psalm 121:7 · SDVPreservation is described as keeping watch over a person’s life.
When they had withdrawn, look, a messenger of the LORD appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Rise, take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word, for Herod will seek the young child to make him perish.
Matthew 2:13 · SDVJoseph receives a warning that reveals the threat in time for the family to move to safety.
The LORD watches over you from all harm; he watches over your living soul.
Psalm 121:7 · SDV

Psalm 121 uses ⁨שׁמר⁩ (shamar) twice for “preserve,” the same root-family behind “saved himself” in Kings. There, keeping takes a concrete, repeated shape: a warning identifies the danger, and the king is kept safe.
