King James wording
King James Version
And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?THE KEY
The Hebrew word translated “help” names deliverance, and the king asks what can bring someone out when even the grain floor and winepress cannot.
THE MEANING
When a plea meets the limits of human provision, this verse asks who can bring the reader out. A grain floor or winepress cannot answer every crisis. The verse leaves the need exposed instead of disguising it as reassurance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that power or stored provision can guarantee rescue when the LORD does not deliver.
THE ROOT
יוֹשִׁיעֵךְ
yoshiʿekh
GROWS FROM
ישע
y-š-ʿ
To deliver, to bring out of danger.
The verb translated “help” is יוֹשִׁיעֵךְ (yoshiʿekh, “deliver you”), from יָשַׁע (yasha, “deliver”). The same root frames the king’s question about whether he can bring rescue; English “help” can sound like assistance, while the Hebrew presses toward being brought out of the crisis.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance.
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun shows the same root naming the way out the question asks for.
moshia: Deliverer, one who brings rescue.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
The root names both deliverance and the one who brings it; here, the king questions whether he can fill that role.
THE PATTERN
When ordinary sources cannot meet the crisis, deliverance is named as coming from beyond what human hands can supply.
And Moses said to the people, Do not fear, take your stand, and see the deliverance of the LORD, which he will do for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again for the ages.My help comes from the LORD, who makes heavens and earth. That he would give us, having been brought out from the hand of our enemies, to serve him without fear,THE THREAD
Look, God is my deliverance. I will lean my full weight and not tremble, for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song, and he has become my deliverance. The same root appears as יְשׁוּעָה (yeshuah, “deliverance”), twice rendered “salvation” here. What the king cannot draw from a threshing floor or winepress is named as God’s deliverance.
