King James wording
King James Version
So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots with him: and he rose by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him about, and the captains of the chariots: and the people fled into their tents.THE KEY
The same moment contains both the king’s counterstrike and the people’s flight, so being surrounded does not dictate a single response.
THE MEANING
Joram is encircled and rises by night to strike the Edomites and their chariot captains. The people flee to their tents. Resistance and retreat occupy the same scene; one does not erase the other.
THE ROOT
הַסֹּבֵב אֵלָיו
ha-sovev elav
GROWS FROM
סבב
To turn or move around; by extension, to encircle.
“circled him” in this verse is ha-sovev elav. The Hebrew word carries the motion of going around, so the threat is not merely nearby: it is actively enclosing him. The same root can describe the surrounding itself without deciding what happens next; here, the king strikes back while the people flee.
ALSO GROWS
saviv: Around, all around.
סָבִיב
This branch makes the spatial force of the verse clear: Joram is within a ring of attackers.
sovev: Going around, encircling.
סוֹבֵב
This participle describes the ongoing action around him, making the enclosure an active pressure rather than a fixed place.
THE PATTERN
Encirclement names the pressure around a person, but it does not prescribe the response.
And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David hurried to get away from the face of Saul, for Saul and his men circled David and his men to take them. All nations circle me; in the nature of the LORD I cut them off.We are pressed on every side, yet not cramped into a narrow place; we are without a way through, yet not without a way out.THE THREAD
All nations circle me; in the nature of the LORD I cut them off.“Compassed” in both verses comes from סבב (sabab), meaning to turn around or encircle. The shared root makes the surrounding force visible in each scene, while the different words that follow show that the ring does not determine the response.
