King James wording
King James Version
And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.THE KEY
The KJV spreads one Hebrew word across “how … did” and “prospered”: David asks the same shalom, wholeness, of Joab, the people, and even the war.
THE MEANING
A question about well-being can carry a second purpose; the verse holds David’s inquiries about others’ shalom beside the concealed aim driving his meeting with Uriah. Care-shaped language does not, by itself, prove caring intent.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A courteous question about someone’s welfare does not guarantee the speaker’s care or honesty.
THE ROOT
לִשְׁלוֹם
lishlom
GROWS FROM
שלם
The root שלם (sh-l-m) carries the sense of being whole, complete, or sound; shalom means well-being, welfare, or wholeness.
“how … did; prospered” in this verse is lishlom. In Hebrew, shalom repeats three times: Joab’s shalom, the people’s shalom, and the war’s shalom. The repeated seed makes David’s questions a repeated measure of wholeness, even as a concealed purpose sits behind them.
ALSO GROWS
shalem: whole, complete
שָׁלֵם
This branch makes clear that the welfare David asks about is a condition of being intact and whole.
shillem: repay, recompense, make good
שִׁלֵּם
The same root can speak of settling what is due; that shade sharpens the contrast between asking after wholeness and concealing harm.
אוּרִיָּה
Uriyyah
GROWS FROM
אור
Uriah is commonly understood as “Yah is my light”; its three-letter seed אור (or) means “light.”
Uriah’s name carries light into the scene while David’s inquiry conceals its purpose. The contrast sharpens the gap between what is said and what is being done.
ALSO GROWS
or: light
אוֹר
This is the lexical core embedded in Uriah’s name, giving it the image of illumination.
ma’or: luminary, light source
מָאוֹר
This branch extends light from a quality to something that gives illumination, deepening the name’s meaning.
THE PATTERN
Speech that names another’s welfare can conceal a purpose that injures that person.
The words of his mouth are smoother than butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are opened swords. And at once he came to Jesus and said, Hail, teacher, and kissed him.THE THREAD
And he asked them about their wholeness, and said, Is your father whole, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?Genesis uses the same root שלם: Joseph asks about his brothers’ shalom and whether their father is well. Those repeated forms let you hear what English renders as “welfare” and “well,” just as 2 Samuel spreads three instances of shalom across different phrases.
