King James wording
King James Version
And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left.THE KEY
The Hebrew word for tidings means what is heard, and this verse catches a real murder inside a false report of total loss.
THE MEANING
Absalom’s killing of Amnon is real, but the report says every one of David’s sons is dead; the next verse corrects it to Amnon alone. The reader stands in the instant when grief is real but the information surrounding it is still unreliable.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false belief is that the first frightening account contains the whole truth: the claim that all the king’s sons are dead is corrected to Amnon alone.
THE ROOT
הַשְּׁמֻעָה
hashmuʿah
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
To hear or listen.
English makes tidings sound like a thing that simply arrives; the Hebrew word is formed from hearing, placing David inside the gap between receiving a claim and knowing what happened. The next verse shows that the gap matters: only Amnon is dead.
ALSO GROWS
shamaʿ: To hear or listen.
שָׁמַע
The report belongs to the same word family as the act of hearing it.
shomeaʿ: One who hears; a hearer.
שֹׁמֵעַ
This branch makes the receiver visible: the news reaches someone who must take it in.
נוֹתַר
nōṯar
GROWS FROM
יתר
y-t-r
To remain over, be left as a remainder, or be more.
“left” in this verse is nōṯar. The report describes total loss through what remains: it claims the remainder has fallen to zero. The next verse corrects that claim, Amnon alone is dead, not all the king’s sons.
ALSO GROWS
yeter: Remainder or surplus.
יֶתֶר
The report’s claim is that there is no remainder at all.
yoter: More or greater.
יוֹתֵר
The same root can name what exceeds or is left over, making the report’s claim of nothing remaining especially stark.
דָּוִד
Dāwīd
GROWS FROM
דוד
d-w-d
Beloved; the beloved one.
David’s name carries belovedness as he receives a report that says every son is gone. That name sharpens the human cost of the moment without softening the killing.
ALSO GROWS
dōd: Beloved one; also uncle or kinsman.
דּוֹד
The name David carries the root’s sense of belovedness.
dōdîm: Loves or caresses.
דּוֹדִים
This form shows the root’s broader field of affection and intimacy.
THE PATTERN
A first report can enlarge a real wound into a false totality before correction arrives.
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother, answered and said, Let not my lord set it to his heart, saying, They have slain all the young men, the king's sons. For Amnon only is dead. For by the mouth of Absalom this has been set from the day that he bent his sister Tamar low.The one who returns a word before he hears it, folly and shame are his.So she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have lifted away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have placed him.THE THREAD
Hear and respond, O Israel. The LORD our God is one LORD.The Hebrew noun for tidings in 2 Samuel and the word Hear here share the root שמע, meaning to hear or listen. Deuteronomy opens with that hearing, while this scene shows a heard report reaching David before its full truth is known.
