King James wording
King James Version
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.THE KEY
The verse asks whether there is wholeness for Avshalom, “father of peace”, and answers with a fate that makes that peace impossible.
THE MEANING
You hear a question about safety become a question about whether wholeness can survive a broken bond. Cushi does not say yes or no; he says the king’s enemies should share the young man’s fate, making Absalom’s death clear by implication. The answer holds victory apart from the shalom David asks about.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false belief that defeating a threat restores wholeness. Cushi’s answer implies the threat is ended through Absalom’s death, yet the question of the son’s well-being remains unanswered.
THE ROOT
שָׁלוֹם
shalom
GROWS FROM
שׁ־ל־ם
sh-l-m
To be whole or complete; to make whole or bring something to a settled end.
The question asks whether there is shalom, whole well-being, for the young man; English “safe” can sound like a narrower question of survival. Absalom (אַבְשָׁלוֹם, Avshalom, “father of peace”) carries the same root in his name, while Cushi’s answer implies death, bringing the name’s peace and the son’s fate into collision.
ALSO GROWS
shalem: Whole, complete, intact.
שָׁלֵם
This branch makes the question larger than whether Absalom survives: it asks whether he is intact and well.
shillem: To repay, make good, or render what is due.
שִׁלֵּם
The same root can describe settling what is owed, but Cushi’s answer offers no restoration of the relationship.
THE PATTERN
Shalom names whole well-being, so asking after it reaches beyond whether a person or community has escaped immediate danger.
And he asked them about their wholeness, and said, Is your father whole, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?Ask for the wholeness of Jerusalem; those who love you are at ease.Wholeness I leave with you; my wholeness I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be stirred, and do not let it shrink.THE THREAD
And the king commanded Joab, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, Be gentle for my sake toward the young man, even toward Absalom. And all the people heard when the king charged all the captains concerning Absalom.David’s plea for gentleness toward Absalom sits beside his question about the young man’s shalom. Cushi’s answer makes the same young man the fate held up for David’s enemies, exposing the fracture between the plea and the battle’s outcome.
