King James wording
King James Version
He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.THE KEY
The heavens bend toward the earth, and the darkness beneath his feet cannot keep him from coming near.
THE MEANING
The distance between the heights and your present ground gives way: he bends the heavens and comes down. Even the darkness beneath his feet belongs within this scene of nearness; it does not stand above him or keep him away.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that darkness means he is absent gives way: here, darkness is beneath his feet as he comes near.
THE ROOT
וַיֵּט
wayyēṭ from nāṭâ
GROWS FROM
נטה
to stretch, extend, or incline
“bends” in this verse is wayyēṭ from nāṭâ. The same root describes stretching a tent and inclining an ear. Here the heavens are pictured as a vast expanse bending low as he comes near; the image carries both extension and inclination.
ALSO GROWS
nāṭâ ʾōhel: to stretch or pitch a tent
נָטָה אֹהֶל
The root that describes the heavens bending also describes spreading out a dwelling, giving the descent the image of a vast canopy drawn low.
haṭṭēh ʾoznekha: incline your ear
הַטֵּה אָזְנְךָ
The same verb can describe an attentive turning toward someone; here the heavens themselves are turned toward the earth.
THE PATTERN
Divine nearness can arrive through cloud and darkness, with the hidden presence still at the center of the scene.
And the people stood far off, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. Then Solomon said, The LORD said that he would pitch his tent in the thick darkness. While he was still speaking, look, a shining cloud cast its shade over them, and look, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I delight; hear him.THE THREAD
He sits upon the circle of the earth, and its settlers are like grasshoppers; he stretches out the heavens like a thin cloth, and stretches them out like a tent to settle in.“Stretcheth out” uses the same root as “bowed” here. Isaiah pictures the heavens as a tent spread for dwelling; this verse pictures that vast expanse bending as he comes down.
