King James wording
King James Version
He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places.THE KEY
The heights remain steep; you are given the footing to stand on them.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks of strength meeting you in the terrain before you. The ascent is not erased: your feet become sure enough for it, and you are made to stand where the ground once felt precarious.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that difficulty means you cannot stand here; the terrain can remain steep while your footing changes.
THE ROOT
יַעֲמִדֵנִי
ya’amideni
GROWS FROM
עמד
ʿ-m-d
To stand or take one’s stand; here, to cause someone to stand.
“stands” in this verse is ya’amideni. The Hebrew says more than that you are placed on a height: you are made to stand there. The height becomes a position you can occupy, not just a place you reach.
ALSO GROWS
amad: To stand, remain, or take one’s stand.
עָמַד
It reveals the stable stance inside the verse’s image of high ground.
ma’amad: A standing position or place.
מַעֲמָד
It echoes the idea of being established in a position where you can remain.
רַגְלַי
raglay
GROWS FROM
רגל
r-g-l
Foot; movement or going about on foot.
The same root connects the feet as a body part with movement across ground. Here, the hind’s feet are not decoration: they are what make steep terrain traversable.
ALSO GROWS
regel: Foot or leg.
רֶגֶל
The verse focuses on the point of contact that lets you balance and move.
ragal: To go about on foot; in some forms, to scout or spy out.
רָגַל
It joins having feet with moving through and examining terrain.
THE PATTERN
Strength appears as reliable footing and movement through difficult ground.
Let him not give your foot to totter; let your watcher not nod.But those who wait upon the LORD exchange their strength; they rise on wings like eagles; they run and do not tire; they walk and do not faint. And make straight tracks for your feet, so that what limps may not be turned aside, but rather be healed.THE THREAD
The LORD God is my strength, and he sets my feet like the feet of hinds, and upon my heights he makes me tread. To the one who leads, upon my strings.Habakkuk repeats the image of feet like a hind’s and standing on high places, while naming the LORD as strength. The shared image shows strength as sure-footed movement that makes the height inhabitable.
