King James wording
King James Version
And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?THE KEY
The verse sets the king’s appetite for a visible number against a hundredfold increase that no count can contain.
THE MEANING
Abundance is already imaginable beyond the number you can see: the LORD can add a hundredfold. Yet the king’s gaze turns to a count, and Joab asks what he takes pleasure in there. The question exposes how measurement can become an appetite of its own.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that abundance becomes real only when it is counted and visible; the verse imagines the LORD adding a hundredfold before the king sees the total.
THE ROOT
חָפֵץ
ḥāp̄ēṣ
GROWS FROM
חפץ
ḥ-p-ṣ
Desire, take pleasure, or be willing.
English can make “delight” sound like a passing feeling, but ḥāp̄ēṣ is desire with direction: what draws the king’s will and pleasure. The verse asks what has captured that desire, not only about the act of counting.
ALSO GROWS
ḥēp̄eṣ: Desire, pleasure, or what is desired.
חֵפֶץ
This noun makes desire visible as something wanted; Joab’s question turns attention to what the king wants from the count.
ḥāphaṣtî: I desired; I took pleasure.
חָפַצְתִּי
This is the form translated “I delight” in Psalm 40:8, where the same desire is directed toward doing God’s will.
וְיוֹסֵף
we-yōsēp̄
GROWS FROM
יסף
y-s-p
Add, increase, or continue.
“add” in this verse is we-yōsēp̄. The same root can name addition and continuation, so the hundredfold is increase beyond the existing measure. Here, Joab voices that increase as what the LORD adds, then questions the king’s pleasure in seeing a count.
ALSO GROWS
Yôsēp̄: Joseph; the name carries the sense “may he add.”
יוֹסֵף
Genesis 30:24 links the name to the hope that the LORD will add another son, echoing the language of increase in Joab’s appeal.
wayyōsep̄: And he added; he continued.
וַיּוֹסֶף
The root can carry addition forward as continuation, opening “add a hundredfold” as more than a fixed total.
THE PATTERN
Desire reveals whether abundance is received as God’s gift or treated as a possession whose value must be counted.
But his delight is in the instruction of the LORD; and over his instruction he murmurs day and night.I delight to do what pleases you, O my God, and your instruction is within my inward parts. And he said to them, Watch, and guard yourselves against grasping, for a person's life does not lie in the overflow of what they hold.THE THREAD
I delight to do what pleases you, O my God, and your instruction is within my inward parts. The same Hebrew desire-root appears as “delight” here and “I delight” there; its force is directed pleasure, not vague happiness. Beside the king’s pleasure in a count, the psalm reveals the question Joab is asking: what does desire turn toward?
