King James wording
King James Version
To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.THE KEY
Rule changes through two movements: it passes out of one house, and a new throne is raised to stand across the whole land.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks now of authority moving out of one ruling house and a new center being raised over the divided field of Israel and Judah, from Dan to Beer-sheba. The passing away of the old rule and the establishment of a new seat are two parts of one complete transition.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A change of power means only that the old authority is gone; nothing new can take its place.
THE ROOT
לְהַעֲבִיר
leha'avir
GROWS FROM
עבר
Pass over or cross; in this verb form, cause something to pass or transfer it.
“carry across” in this verse is leha'avir. “Translate” here carries the image of making rule cross from one house to another. The verse describes a passage of authority, not merely the removal of a ruler.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāvar: Pass over; cross.
עָבַר
The simple form names the movement contained in the transfer of the kingdom.
maʿavar: Passage; crossing.
מַעֲבָר
This branch makes visible the crossing from Saul’s house into David’s rule.
לְהָקִים
lehaqim
GROWS FROM
קום
Rise or stand; in this verb form, raise or cause to stand.
“raise up” in this verse is lehaqim. The throne is not only assigned to David; it is made to stand. The transfer out of one house is paired with raising a stable seat of rule in another.
ALSO GROWS
qām: Rose; stood up.
קָם
This form shows the root’s basic movement from not standing to standing.
hēqīm: Raised; established.
הֵקִים
This causative form shares the action of making the throne stand.
דָּוִד
Dāwīd
GROWS FROM
דוד
Beloved; the name is traditionally linked with dōd, beloved.
“David” in this verse is Dāwīd. The new ruler’s name carries the sense of “beloved.” The verse names not only the house receiving rule but the person whose name holds this nature.
ALSO GROWS
dōd: Beloved; also uncle in some contexts.
דּוֹד
This is the word traditionally linked to David’s name.
dōdīm: Loves; expressions of love.
דּוֹדִים
This related form appears in the language of love and echoes the name’s root.
THE PATTERN
A transfer of rule is completed when authority leaves one house and a new center is established across the full domain.
And the LORD said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have cast him off from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go, I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have seen a king for myself among his sons. And he changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings and raises up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who know understanding. And the seventh messenger blows the trumpet, and great voices sound in heaven, saying, The governance of the world becomes the governance of our Lord and of his Anointed One, and he reigns into the ages of the ages.THE THREAD
And your house and your kingdom shall be steady before your face for the ages; your throne shall be set firm for the ages. The transfer in 3:10 opens into a vision of the throne’s lasting establishment. The new seat raised over Israel and Judah is connected to David’s house and kingdom across generations.
