King James wording
King James Version
And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.THE KEY
The ark is being carried, accompanied, and preceded, what is sacred enters sight through human movement.
THE MEANING
The ark of God moves from a house in a procession: some carry it, others accompany it, and Ahio walks ahead. The sacred appears in a concrete order of bearing, nearness, and leading. What is holy comes into view through bodies moving together.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּ
vayyissa'uhu
GROWS FROM
נשׂא
To lift, carry, or bear; the same verb can describe bearing something away.
“lifted” in this verse is vayyissa'uhu. Under “brought” lies a verb whose first image is lifting and carrying. The same root can also describe bearing a burden or bearing away crookedness, holding carrying and release in one field of meaning.
ALSO GROWS
massa: Burden, load
מַשָּׂא
A burden is what is carried; the ark’s movement belongs to this same concrete field of bearing.
nasi: Leader, prince; one raised up
נָשִׂיא
This related word connects being lifted up with leadership, while Ahio’s place ahead of the ark shows leading as movement at the front.
nasa avon: Bear or forgive crookedness; carry it away
נָשָׂא עָוֹן
The same verb used for carrying can describe bearing crookedness away, joining weight and release.
אֲבִינָדָב
Avinadav
GROWS FROM
נדב
To volunteer, be willing, or act generously.
Abinadab combines אָבִי (avi, “my father”) with נָדָב (nadav, “generous” or “willing”), giving the name the sense “my father is generous” or “my father is noble.” The ark begins its movement from a house whose name carries the note of willing generosity.
ALSO GROWS
nadav: Volunteer or offer willingly
נָדַב
This verb gives the name its note of generosity freely expressed.
nedavah: Freewill offering
נְדָבָה
The related noun makes generosity a freely given gift, echoing the name attached to the house from which the ark moves.
THE PATTERN
What is carried becomes present through the movement of those who bear it.
And you set the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark, that the ark may be lifted with them. And the sons of the Levites lifted the ark of God upon their shoulders, with the poles upon it, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.Always carrying the dying of Jesus about in the body, so that the life of Jesus also may be made visible in our body.THE THREAD
And you set the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark, that the ark may be lifted with them. The Hebrew verb נָשָׂא (nasa, lift or carry) links this verse’s movement with the instruction that the ark be borne with its poles. The root makes “brought it out” part of the same physical language of carrying and bearing.
