This verse in the King James

King James wording
So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

The “patience” being praised is staying under real pressure with trust intact, not feeling untouched by it.

The pressure around you is not erased by your endurance: the verse names persecution and affliction plainly, even as it names your trust. Your staying under that pressure is visible beyond your immediate circle and becomes a source of honor in the churches.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that continued hardship proves trust has failed: this verse places trust and persecution in the same lived sentence.

ὑπομονή

hypomonē

GROWS FROM

μένω

menō

Remain, stay, abide.

“bearing up under” in this verse is hypomonē. Hypomonē carries the sense of remaining under something, not simply waiting calmly. Paired with trust, it shows endurance that stays present while pressure continues.

ALSO GROWS

hypomenō: To stay under or endure.

ὑπομένω

This verb shares the noun’s sense of remaining under pressure.

monē: A place of remaining or abiding.

μονή

It echoes the root’s sense of staying rather than disappearing when difficulty comes.

θλῖψις

thlipsis

GROWS FROM

θλιβ-

thlib-

Press, squeeze.

The word holds the image of pressure, something pressing in on you. Set beside endurance and trust, it keeps the hardship real while showing that it does not define the whole of your response.

ALSO GROWS

thlibō: To press or squeeze; by extension, to afflict.

θλίβω

The verb makes the pressure inside “tribulations” tangible.

thlipsis: Pressure or affliction.

θλῖψις

This is the word translated “tribulations” in the verse.

πίστις

pistis

GROWS FROM

πιστ-

pist-

Trust, reliance, trustworthiness.

Pistis is trust: leaning your full weight on someone. Here it is present in the same conditions as persecution and pressure, so trust is lived reliance amid hardship.

ALSO GROWS

pisteuō: To trust or entrust oneself.

πιστεύω

The verb expresses trust as an act of reliance, not just an idea held in the mind.

pistos: Trustworthy or reliable; firm and steady.

πιστός

This related word shows the steadiness associated with trust.

Trust can remain active under pressure without making the pressure painless.

Though he slay me, I will wait for him. Yet before his face I will argue my ways.
Job 13:15 · SDVJob names trust while facing what he understands as a threat to his life, without pretending the danger feels safe.
And not only that, but we also boast in the pressures, knowing that they work out a bearing up under.
Romans 5:3 · SDVThis verse places tribulation and endurance together, as the present verse does.
Knowing that the proving of your trust works out a bearing up under.
James 1:3 · SDVThe testing of trust brings endurance into view, the same pairing found here.
Knowing that the proving of your trust works out a bearing up under.
James 1:3 · SDV

James uses the same Greek words, pistis (trust) and hypomonē (endurance), and says the testing of trust works endurance. That makes explicit the bond this verse displays: trust persists within endurance under pressure.
