King James wording
King James Version
And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,THE KEY
The choice is already made; the prayer asks the Heart-Knower to make the chosen one visible.
THE MEANING
The Lord perceives every person’s inner life, including what outward appearances cannot settle. When the right choice is unclear, this prayer asks for the choice already made to be shown. The reader’s inner life is not hidden from that knowing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that what is hidden within a person is unknowable, or that outward appearance can settle what only the heart-knower perceives.
THE ROOT
καρδιογνῶστα
kardiognōsta
GROWS FROM
γινώσκω
ginōskō
To know or perceive; here, joined with kardia, it names the Lord as one who knows the heart.
“perceive” in this verse is kardiognōsta. The address is more than a claim that the Lord has information about people: it names him as the Heart-Knower. The compound holds heart and knowing together, revealing a perception that reaches the inner person English can leave hidden.
ALSO GROWS
gnōsis: knowledge, knowing
γνῶσις
It shares the knowing-root and shows that the verse’s perception is a form of knowing.
gnōstos: known, familiar
γνωστός
It carries the same root into the state of being known: no heart is unfamiliar to the one addressed.
ἀνάδειξον
anadeixon
GROWS FROM
δεικ-
deik-
To show, point out, or make evident.
“shew” in this verse is anadeixon. The prayer asks for the choice to be brought into view. Since the verse says the Lord has already chosen, the showing reveals what is settled but still unseen to the people praying.
ALSO GROWS
deigma: example, sign
δεῖγμα
A visible sign makes something discernible, echoing the request to show which person is chosen.
apodeixis: demonstration, proof
ἀπόδειξις
This branch makes the root’s movement from hidden to evident explicit.
ἐξελέξω
exelexō
GROWS FROM
λέγω (legō), in ἐκλέγομαι (eklegomai)
To pick out or select; with ek-, to choose out.
“chosen” in this verse is exelexō. The wording places the choosing before the request to show: the prayer seeks to recognize whom the Lord has selected. The distinction between a choice and its disclosure is already inside the sentence.
ALSO GROWS
eklogē: selection, choosing
ἐκλογή
This noun carries the same choosing-family into the act or outcome of selecting.
eklektos: chosen, selected
ἐκλεκτός
This form describes the one picked out, the person whose identity the prayer asks to see.
THE PATTERN
The Lord’s discernment reaches the inner person before outward appearance can settle what is true.
But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have pushed him away. The LORD does not see as the human sees. The human sees what is outside, but the LORD sees the heart. To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, you probe me, and you perceive me.And no creation is hidden before him, but all things are naked and bared at the throat to the eyes of him to whom our account belongs.THE THREAD
And God, who knows the hearts, bore witness to them, giving them the Set-Apart Breath, even as he did to us.The same Greek title, kardiognōstēs, appears in both verses: God is the Heart-Knower. Here that knowing is named as the basis for showing whom he has chosen; in Acts 15:8 it accompanies God’s witness to people whose hearts he knows.
