This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The breath is already moving across the boundary before the witnesses can explain it.

The gift reaches people outside the circle that expects to recognize it, and the breath is present in them as fully as it is among those watching. Their astonishment exposes the boundary they have mistaken for a limit on where the gift can appear.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that the breath belongs only to those who share the insiders’ boundary, or that outsiders must first become insiders to receive the gift.

πνεύματος

pneumatos

GROWS FROM

⁨πνευ-⁩ (pneu-), from ⁨πνέω⁩ (pneō)

To breathe or blow.

“Set-Apart Breath” in this verse is pneumatos. The noun translated “Ghost” belongs to the same word-family as breathing and blowing: one word-field holds breath, wind, and spirit together. Here the gift is poured on Gentiles too, so the breath of God is not contained by the boundary its witnesses assume.

ALSO GROWS

pneuma: Breath, wind, spirit.

πνεῦμα

This is the word in the verse; its range lets the reader hear breath and spirit together in the gift poured out.

pnoē: Breath, blowing.

πνοή

This related word makes the breathing sense audible within the same family.

δωρεά

dōreá

GROWS FROM

δωρε-

dōre-

A gift freely bestowed.

The gift is bestowed, not acquired by adopting an insider’s identity. The verse’s “also” names inclusion as the surprise: the same gift crosses the line the witnesses expect to contain it.

ALSO GROWS

dōreán: Freely, without cost.

δωρεάν

This related form underscores that a gift is given rather than earned.

dōréomai: Give as a gift.

δωρέομαι

The verb makes explicit the action held in the noun: something is given.

God’s breath is poured beyond the boundaries people treat as conditions of belonging.

And it shall be afterward, that I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your elders will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
Joel 2:28 · SDVThe outpouring reaches “all flesh,” extending the gift beyond a single group.
And it will come to pass in the last days, God says, I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
Acts 2:17 · SDVThe promised outpouring appears across generations, without being confined to one kind of person.
That the blessing of Abraham might come into the nations in Jesus the Anointed One, and that we might take hold of the promise of the breath through trust.
Galatians 3:14 · SDVThe promise names the Gentiles as recipients of the same gift.
If then God gave them the same gift as he gave to us, who leaned our weight upon the Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, what was I, that I could withstand God?
Acts 11:17 · SDV

Peter uses the same word, ⁨δωρεά⁩ (dōreá, gift), and calls what they received the “like gift” given to the witnesses. That shared word turns the surprise into recognition: the boundary has not produced a lesser kind of giving.
