This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

The verse lets movement precede certainty: the messenger is followed before the rescue is recognized as real.

You can be moving through a real deliverance while your mind still calls it only a vision. Not knowing what is happening does not make it less true; recognition can catch up after movement begins.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that if you cannot explain what is happening, nothing real is happening.

ἀληθές

alēthes

GROWS FROM

⁨ληθ-⁩/⁨λαθ-⁩ (lēth-/lath-)

This word family concerns what escapes notice or remains hidden; ⁨ἀληθής⁩ (alēthēs, true) is traditionally analyzed with privative ⁨ἀ-⁩ as “not hidden.”

The verse places “true” beside “did not know”: the event is real before Peter recognizes it. The hidden and unnoticed echo in the word family makes that gap audible, truth is present while it still escapes his awareness.

ALSO GROWS

lanthanō: To escape notice, remain unnoticed.

λανθάνω

Peter does not yet recognize what is happening, though the event is already real.

lēthē: Forgetfulness, oblivion.

λήθη

It belongs to the same hiddenness family, illuminating the distance between an event and conscious recognition.

alētheia: Truth.

ἀλήθεια

The related noun carries the same contrast between what is hidden and what is recognized as true.

ὅραμα

horama

GROWS FROM

ὁρα-

hora-

To see or perceive.

⁨ὅραμα⁩ (horama, vision) names what is seen; it does not settle what the seeing means. Peter’s perception is active, but he mistakes the real deliverance for a vision, the gap is between seeing and recognizing what is true.

ALSO GROWS

horaō: To see, perceive.

ὁράω

The verb names the act of seeing that gives the vision its name.

horasis: Sight, vision.

ὅρασις

This related noun shows how the same seeing family can name an experience of perception.

horatos: Visible, perceptible.

ὁρατός

It points to what can be seen, while the verse shows that visibility alone does not guarantee recognition.

Recognition can lag behind what is already present.

And Jacob woke out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not perceive it.
Genesis 28:16 · SDVThe LORD is present before Jacob recognizes what the place holds.
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, and did not know that it was Jesus.
John 20:14 · SDVMary sees Jesus standing before she recognizes who is before her.
But their eyes were held, so that they could not recognize him.
Luke 24:16 · SDVJesus is with them while recognition has not yet arrived.
And when Peter came to himself, he said, "Now I truly know that the LORD has sent his messenger, and has taken me out of the hand of Herod, and from all that the people of the Jews were waiting for."
Acts 12:11 · SDV

Acts 12:11 repeats the same Greek word, ⁨ἄγγελος⁩ (angelos), meaning messenger: the one Peter followed here is the one he later recognizes as sent by the Lord. Understanding catches up to action, he has already gone out and followed before he can name what is real.
