This verse in the King James

King James wording
(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

Novelty can become a closed loop of telling and hearing, while newness that matters changes the life that receives it.

The verse names a loop still recognizable now: newness itself becomes the subject, passed from mouth to ear until it fills the available time. Fresh information can feel like movement while leaving perception unchanged.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that hearing or repeating something new is the same as understanding it.

καινότερον

kainoteron

GROWS FROM

καιν-

kain-

New or fresh.

Kainoteron is comparative: “newer.” The appetite keeps moving because each fresh thing can be replaced by something newer; in the same Greek word family, newness can also describe a changed life.

ALSO GROWS

kainos: New or fresh.

καινός

This is the base form behind “newer,” showing that the verse centers on the pursuit of freshness.

kainotēs: Newness.

καινότης

In Romans 6:4, newness describes a way of life, not simply another subject to discuss.

anakainoō: Renew or make new.

ἀνακαινόω

This branch makes the contrast plain: newness can describe renewal, rather than a cycle of seeking the next novelty.

Scripture’s meaningful newness takes shape as a new path and a changed life, rather than an endless exchange of novel things.

Behold, I am making a new thing; now it sprouts; will you not perceive it? I will even lay a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the parched land.
Isaiah 43:19 · SDVThe new thing becomes a way through wilderness and water in a dry place: newness takes form in changed conditions.
So we were laid in the ground with him through immersion into death, that as the Anointed One was raised from the dead through the weight of the Father, so also we might walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:4 · SDVNewness is expressed as a changed walk and a new way of life.
So if anyone is in the Anointed One, he is a new creation. What was old has passed by. Look, all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 · SDVHere newness is a transformation in which the old passes and life becomes new.
And the one seated on the throne says, Look, I make all things new. And he says to me, Write, for these words are steady and true.
Revelation 21:5 · SDV

Acts uses kainoteron, “something newer,” for novelty continually traded through speech and hearing. Revelation uses the same kain- word family for newness that remakes all things, opening a deeper sense of what the appetite for the new might be seeking.
