King James wording
King James Version
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;THE KEY
The one who made everything is not housed by anything human hands can make.
THE MEANING
The world around you, including every place people set apart as sacred, belongs to the work of its Maker. No human-built space contains the one who gives all things their being.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
God is present only inside a designated religious building, and human hands can build a home large enough to contain him.
THE ROOT
ποιήσας
poiēsas
GROWS FROM
ποιέω
poieō: to make, do, or bring about.
“handmade” in this verse is poiēsas. The Greek verb behind “made” also appears inside χειροποίητος (cheiropoiētos), “made by hand,” describing the temples. The same making that brings the world into being also names the human craft of building a temple: the Maker of all things is not one more thing made by hands.
ALSO GROWS
poiētēs: maker, doer
ποιητής
The maker-word shares this root, keeping the focus on the one who acts and brings things about.
poiēma: a thing made, a work
ποίημα
This branch names what results from making; even a human-built temple belongs among the works, not alongside their Maker.
THE PATTERN
The one who makes heaven and earth is not contained by a sacred structure human hands build.
But will God truly settle on the earth? Behold, the heavens and the heavens of the heavens cannot hold you; how much less this house that I have built? Thus says the LORD. The heavens are my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house that you will build for me? And where is the place of my rest?Yet the Highest does not settle in what is made by hands, as the prophet says.THE THREAD
All things came to be through him, and apart from him not one thing came to be that has come to be.John uses the same Greek root, ποιέω (poieō), for “made.” Acts shows that the maker of all things is not housed by a temple made by human hands; John makes clear that nothing made stands outside that making.
