King James wording
King James Version
But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;THE KEY
The Greek uses the same seeing verb for what you have seen and for what will appear, making witness the bridge between encounter and continuing disclosure.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks a present sequence: a person rises and stands, then bears witness to what has been seen and what is still being disclosed. Encounter grounds the witness, while disclosure continues beyond what is already known.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a witness must already possess the whole picture: testimony can begin with what has been seen while further disclosure remains ahead.
THE ROOT
ὤφθην
ōphthēn
GROWS FROM
ὁράω
horaō
To see or perceive; in passive forms, to be seen or appear.
“have been shown to you” in this verse is ōphthēn. English separates “appeared” from “seen,” but both forms belong to the same Greek seeing verb. The witness is grounded in encounter, with the same verb carrying the disclosure forward into what is still to come.
ALSO GROWS
ōphthēn: I appeared; literally, I was seen.
ὤφθην
This is the appearance that begins the encounter and commissions the witness.
eides: You saw.
εἶδες
This is the seeing that becomes part of the witness’s testimony.
μάρτυρα
martyra
GROWS FROM
μάρτυς
martys
A witness; one who gives testimony.
The Greek word for the person appointed as witness belongs to a family that also names the act of testifying and the testimony itself. The verse binds witnessing to what has been encountered and seen.
ALSO GROWS
martyreō: To testify or bear witness.
μαρτυρέω
The verb shows the witness’s role as giving testimony.
martyrion: Testimony or evidence.
μαρτύριον
The same word family names what the witness carries forward.
στῆθι
stēthi
GROWS FROM
ἵστημι
histēmi
To stand, set, or place upright.
“stand upon your feet” in this verse is stēthi. The command to stand follows the command to rise, and both draw on the same Greek word family. The witness’s public role begins with being raised and set on their feet.
ALSO GROWS
anastēthi: Rise; stand up.
ἀνάστηθι
This is the preceding command to rise, built with the same standing root.
stēthi: Stand.
στῆθι
This is the command that places the person upright before the witness commission.
THE PATTERN
Witness grows from what is encountered and seen, carrying that encounter into testimony.
You are my witnesses, says the LORD, and my servant, whom I have chosen, so that you may perceive and lean your weight on me, and understand that I AM. Before me no God was shaped, and behind me there shall be none. And I have perceived, and I have borne witness that this is the Son of God.For the life was made visible, and we have perceived it, and we bear witness, and we declare to you the life of the ages, which was with the Father, and was made visible to us.THE THREAD
For the life was made visible, and we have perceived it, and we bear witness, and we declare to you the life of the ages, which was with the Father, and was made visible to us.This verse joins manifestation, seeing, and bearing witness in the same movement as Acts 26:16. What is disclosed becomes the substance of testimony, while the testimony carries that encounter onward.
