This verse in the King James

King James wording
Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

Here, deliverance depends on staying inside the very vessel carrying people through the storm.

The verse speaks with a stark condition: lives are carried through danger by remaining with the vessel that can bring them out. Deliverance is bound to the means through which it arrives; leaving the ship removes the possibility named here.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that rescue can be separated from the means carrying you: here, the sailors leaving the ship would make deliverance impossible.

μείνωσιν

meinōsin

GROWS FROM

μένω

menō

Remain, stay, continue.

“stay” in this verse is meinōsin. “Abide” is an active staying in place, and the verse makes that staying the condition for life to continue. English can make the word sound like a general spiritual state; here it is concrete: remaining aboard keeps the route to deliverance open.

ALSO GROWS

monē: A dwelling or place of staying.

μονή

This branch carries the sense of remaining into the place where one dwells; in the verse, the ship is the place within which survival remains possible.

epimenō: Continue or persist in staying.

ἐπιμένω

This compound preserves the same root of remaining and emphasizes continuation, illuminating the verse’s condition: they must keep to the ship.

σωθῆναι

sōthēnai

GROWS FROM

σῴζω

sōzō

Rescue from danger or bring safely through.

“delivered” in this verse is sōthēnai. The word translated “saved” also speaks of being rescued and brought safely through. In this verse the danger is physical and immediate: remaining aboard is bound to whether the others make it through alive.

ALSO GROWS

sōtēria: The state or act of being rescued.

σωτηρία

This noun makes visible the deliverance at stake in the verse: being brought through danger alive.

sōtēr: One who rescues or delivers.

σωτήρ

This branch names the agent of rescue, while the verse shows that deliverance also depends on the people staying with the vessel carrying them through.

Life is preserved by remaining within the vessel that carries it through danger.

And every standing thing that was upon the face of the ground was wiped out, from humankind to cattle, to the creeping thing, and to the birds of the heavens, and they were wiped from the earth. Only Noah, and those with him in the ark, were left.
Genesis 7:23 · SDVNoah and those with him remain alive within the ark as destruction passes over the earth.
Then they are glad, for they are quiet; and he leads them to the harbor of their delight.
Psalm 107:30 · SDVThe storm-tossed travelers reach safety as they are brought through the waters to harbor.
who once refused to yield, while the slowness to heat of God waited in the days of Noah, as the ark was being built, in which few, eight living souls, were delivered through water.
1 Peter 3:20 · SDVThe verse describes the ark as the vessel through which a few are delivered through the waters.
Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it stays in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
John 15:4 · SDV

The same Greek verb ⁨μένω⁩ (menō, remain) stands behind “abide” in both verses. In Acts, remaining in the ship preserves bodily life; here, remaining in the vine is bound to fruitfulness, revealing how life continues through what carries it.
