King James wording
King James Version
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.THE KEY
The builders’ rejection reveals the limit of their sight, not the stone’s capacity: the discarded one becomes the point the whole structure turns on.
THE MEANING
A verdict of rejection does not settle your worth or what you can hold; it may expose the limits of those judging you. The verse holds the reversal in one image: what is thrown aside becomes the corner that joins and directs the whole.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that rejection proves you have no place or value.
THE ROOT
λίθος
lithos
GROWS FROM
λιθ-
lith-
Stone; a stone or building block.
The Hebrew Psalm behind this image uses אֶבֶן (ʾeven, stone), traditionally heard in wordplay as אָב (ʾav, father) + בֵּן (ben, son). The image can hold relationship inside the very stone the builders discard.
ALSO GROWS
lithoi: stones
λίθοι
The plural keeps the image concrete: the builders are handling actual stones and judging where each belongs.
lithostrōtos: paved with stone
λιθόστρωτος
The same stone can form part of a surface others stand on; its place in a structure changes what it can bear.
ἀπεδοκιμάσθη
apedokimasthē
GROWS FROM
δοκιμ-
dokim-
Test, examine, and judge as approved or unfit.
“treated as nothing” in this verse is apedokimasthē. The Greek verb ἀποδοκιμάζω (apodokimazō, reject after examination) carries the sense of assessing and disqualifying. The builders’ rejection is a considered verdict, yet their expertise does not make that verdict final.
ALSO GROWS
dokimazō: test, examine, approve
δοκιμάζω
It makes the builders’ act an appraisal, not a casual failure to notice the stone.
dokimos: approved, proven
δόκιμος
The same word family can describe what passes examination, sharpening the contrast between the builders’ judgment and the stone’s eventual place.
γωνίας
gōnias
GROWS FROM
γων-
gōn-
Angle or corner; the point where lines or sides meet.
“corner” in this verse is gōnias. The stone becomes the head at the joint where the structure’s sides meet. Its new place does not merely raise its status; it determines how the whole structure comes together.
ALSO GROWS
gōnia: corner, angle
γωνία
The word locates the stone at a meeting point, where its placement sets the relation between adjoining sides.
akrogōniaios: cornerstone
ἀκρογωνιαῖος
This related word names a stone associated with the corner and echoes the verse’s image of a rejected stone made structurally decisive.
THE PATTERN
What builders reject can become the stone that gives the whole structure its alignment.
The stone the builders push away becomes the head of the corner. Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a weighty cornerstone, a foundation set firm. The one who leans his weight will not hurry. So honor is yours, you who lean your full weight upon him; but for those who will not yield, the stone the builders tested and set aside has become the head of the corner,THE THREAD
The stone the builders push away becomes the head of the corner.Acts 4:11 speaks the same stone image found in Psalm 118:22, where refusal and becoming the corner’s head are already joined. The Psalm lets you see that the builders’ verdict is only one moment in the stone’s place in the structure.
