This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

The brothers can sell Joseph into Egypt, but their envy cannot sell him out of God’s presence.

Envy can turn closeness into betrayal, and rejection can feel like proof that you have been abandoned. Yet this verse holds both realities together: others can cast you into a narrower place, while God remains with you there.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Betrayal and displacement do not prove that God has left you.

ζηλώσαντες

zēlōsantes

GROWS FROM

ζῆλος

zēlos

Ardor or zeal; in this word family, that intensity can also take the form of envy.

“burning with envy” in this verse is zēlōsantes. The verb belongs to the same word family as the word for a zealot, holding ardent zeal and envious rivalry close together. Here that intensity turns against a brother, revealing envy as a destructive direction of fervor.

ALSO GROWS

zēloō: to be zealous, or to envy

ζηλόω

This is the verb used here; its range links the intensity of zeal with the rivalry directed at Joseph.

zēlōtēs: a zealot, an ardent partisan

ζηλωτής

This related word makes the shared intensity visible: the word family can describe ardor, while Acts shows it turned into envy.

Displacement and danger do not by themselves sever a person from God’s presence and love.

Even though I walk through the valley of deepest darkness, I do not fear harm, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4 · SDVThe speaker passes through danger with the assurance of God’s presence beside him.
When you cross through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not kindle upon you.
Isaiah 43:2 · SDVThe promise meets the reader in the waters and fire, with presence during the passage through them.
For I am leaning my full weight upon this, that neither death, nor life, nor messengers, nor rulers, nor powers, nor things standing here, nor things about to come. Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Jesus the Anointed One, our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 · SDVEven the forces named as threats cannot separate the reader from God’s love.
He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant.
Psalm 105:17 · SDV

Psalm 105 holds the same event in a second frame: Joseph is sold, and he is also sent ahead. That does not make the brothers’ envy harmless; it reveals that their act does not exhaust what the event becomes.
