This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

The voice reaches their ears without revealing a speaker, and its hearers are left speechless.

You can be present in the same moment as others and still encounter it differently: a voice reaches these men, while no speaker enters their sight. They hear, yet have no words; hearing remains real even when sight cannot show its source.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that seeing is the only proof that a voice or presence is real.

φωνή

phōnē

GROWS FROM

φων

phōn

sound, voice

The Greek word can name a voice or a sound; it does not by itself say that the hearer sees a speaker or understands the words. The verse holds sound and sight apart: the men hear, but no person appears to them.

ALSO GROWS

phōneō: to call out, speak aloud

φωνέω

This branch shows the voice as an act of sounding or calling, which can reach a hearer without a visible speaker.

symphōneō: to sound together; to agree

συμφωνέω

The same sound-root can extend to voices in accord; here the men share the sound without the verse saying they share the same encounter.

aphōnos: voiceless, silent

ἄφωνος

This branch sharpens the contrast: a voice is heard while the men remain without speech.

A voice can be heard while its visible source or meaning remains uncertain.

It stood, yet I could not recognize its shape; a figure was before my eyes; there was a hush, and I heard a voice, saying,
Job 4:16 · SDVThe speaker hears a voice but cannot discern the form before him.
And after the quaking, a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire, a sound of thin stillness.
1 Kings 19:12 · SDVThe voice follows the visible upheaval without appearing as the fire or earthquake.
The crowd standing by, hearing it, said it had thundered, and others said, A messenger spoke to him.
John 12:29 · SDVPeople hear the same sound yet differ over what it means.
And those with me beheld the light, but they did not hear the voice of the one speaking to me.
Acts 22:9 · SDV

This telling uses the same Greek root for “voice,” yet says the companions do not hear the voice of the one speaking to Saul. Read together, the accounts leave room for sound reaching the ear without the speaker’s words becoming an address the hearer receives.
