King James wording
King James Version
I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.THE KEY
The hinge is shuv, the turn back that repeated loss fails to produce.
THE MEANING
The LORD names the blows plainly: blight and mildew, then the palmerworm consuming what had increased. The verse holds the hard fact that even such loss does not itself produce a return to God; the missing movement is named without disguise.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that enough hardship will automatically turn a person back to God.
THE ROOT
שַׁבְתֶּם
shavtem
GROWS FROM
שׁוּב
To turn back, return.
The verse’s final words are about direction: despite the losses, the people have not turned back to the LORD. The root makes the absence more than a lack of repair; the return itself has not happened.
ALSO GROWS
shuvah: Return! Turn back!
שׁוּבָה
This is the same root as the direct call to return in Hosea 14:1, giving a voice to the movement Amos says is missing.
meshubah: Turning away; backsliding.
מְשׁוּבָה
This branch names the opposite direction, showing that not returning is not neutral stillness, the person remains turned away.
THE PATTERN
Loss can expose the heart’s direction, but it cannot determine whether a person turns back.
And I also gave you empty teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places. Yet you have not turned back to me, says the LORD.And the rest of the men who are not killed by these blows still do not turn from the works of their hands, that they should not bow down to demons and idols of gold, and of silver, and of bronze, and of stone, and of wood, which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk. And he rose and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and his inward parts were moved, and he ran and fell upon his neck and kissed him.THE THREAD
Turn back, Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have stumbled in your crookedness.Hosea uses the same root, שׁוּב (shuv), as Amos’s “returned.” Amos names the turn that has not happened; Hosea speaks that same movement directly.
