King James wording
King James Version
And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.THE KEY
The four names standing before the king announce a deeper authority: God judges, Yah shows favor, none is like God, and Yah helps.
THE MEANING
When you stand in a room where someone else holds power, that room’s verdict is not the whole account of you. Daniel (דָּנִיֵּאל, Daniyyel: “God is my judge”), Hananiah (חֲנַנְיָה, Ḥananyah: “Yah has shown favor”), Mishael (מִישָׁאֵל, Mîšāʾēl: “Who is what God is?”), and Azariah (עֲזַרְיָה, ʿAzaryah: “Yah has helped”) carry those meanings into the room. Their place before the king does not create the nature their names already declare.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that the person with authority over you gets the final word on who you are. Recognition can open a place before the king, but it does not create the nature you carry.
THE ROOT
דָּנִיֵּאל
Daniyyel
GROWS FROM
דין
דִּין (din) means judgment; the name joins dan, “judge,” with El, “God”: “God is my judge.”
The name spoken in the king’s court carries its own court: Daniel means “God is my judge.” The human king can examine him, but the name places judgment in a deeper authority.
ALSO GROWS
din: Judgment
דִּין
This branch makes the name’s language of judgment explicit while the king assesses Daniel.
dan: He judges; judge
דָּן
This form brings the root into a person’s action, echoing the name’s claim about who judges.
חֲנַנְיָה
Ḥananyah
GROWS FROM
חנן
חָנַן (ḥānan) means to show favor or be gracious; the name means “Yah has shown favor.”
Hananiah’s name locates favor beyond the king’s assessment. The same root gives the concrete word for favor, keeping the name’s meaning close to what is received.
ALSO GROWS
ḥen: Favor
חֵן
This noun from the same root names the favor Hananiah’s name says Yah has shown.
ḥānan: To show favor
חָנַן
The verb keeps the name active: favor is something given, not a status the court creates.
עֲזַרְיָה
ʿAzaryah
GROWS FROM
עזר
עָזַר (ʿāzar) means to help; the name means “Yah has helped.”
Azariah carries help into the place where the king evaluates the four men. The name says the support beneath their standing is already present before the court recognizes them.
ALSO GROWS
ʿēzer: Help; helper
עֵזֶר
This noun gives the name’s root a form of support, something present to uphold a person.
ʿāzar: To help
עָזַר
This verb names the action Azariah’s name attributes to Yah.
THE PATTERN
A person’s distinctive wisdom can become visible even to the authority assessing them.
And the Great House said to Joseph, Since God has made you know all this, there is none as discerning and wise as you are.Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and grasped that they were unlettered and ordinary men, they marveled, and they knew them, that they had been with Jesus.THE THREAD
Then this Daniel stood apart above the princes and the governors, because an overflow of breath was in him, and the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.Daniel’s name (דָּנִיֵּאל, Daniyyel: “God is my judge”) returns as he stands out in another royal court. The repeated name opens this brief recognition into a longer pattern: a king can elevate Daniel, while the name locates his deepest judgment in God.
