This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,

The touch comes before the strength: restoration reaches you while you are still unable to steady yourself.

When your strength is gone, encounter can reach you before you can recover it. The touch meets you in that vulnerability and makes you firm.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that you must first become strong enough to receive help is undone: here the touch reaches you in weakness, and strength follows.

וַיְחַזְּקֵנִי

wayḥazzəqēnî

GROWS FROM

חזק

ḥazaq

To be strong, make firm, or take hold.

“took hold of” in this verse is wayḥazzəqēnî. The root can mean becoming strong, making firm, and taking hold. So “strengthened” carries a tactile edge: you are made firm through an encounter that touches you, as if being held fast in your weakness.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāzāq: Strong, firm.

חָזָק

This form names the firm state the touch brings about in the weakened man.

heḥĕzîq: He held fast; he took hold.

הֶחֱזִיק

This form makes the root’s grasping sense visible: strength can arrive as being steadied by a hold.

וַיִּגַּע

wayyiggaʿ

GROWS FROM

נגע

nagaʿ

To touch, reach, or come into contact; in some forms, to strike.

“touched” in this verse is wayyiggaʿ. The root’s family includes both reaching contact and ⁨נֶגַע⁩ (negaʿ), a blow or affliction. Touch is consequential here: this contact does not wound but restores firmness.

ALSO GROWS

negaʿ: A blow, plague, or affliction.

נֶגַע

This branch shows that the same family can name contact that wounds; here the touch has the opposite effect and strengthens.

higgiaʿ: He reached; he arrived.

הִגִּיעַ

The root also carries the sense of reaching or arriving: the restoring contact reaches the person in his vulnerability.

Touch becomes a point of encounter where a person’s condition changes toward restoration.

And, behold, a hand touched me, and shook me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands.
Daniel 10:10 · SDVA hand’s touch meets the weakened person and changes his posture.
And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will. Be clean. And straightway his leprosy was cleansed.
Matthew 8:3 · SDVTouch meets affliction, and the person’s condition changes.
And Ananias went his way and entered the house, and setting his hands upon him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, who was seen by you on the road as you came, has sent me, so that you might look up again and be filled with the Set-Apart Breath.
Acts 9:17 · SDVHands laid on Saul accompany the return of his sight.
And while he lingered, the men gripped his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, the LORD sparing him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.
Genesis 19:16 · SDV

“Laid hold” comes from the same root as “strengthened.” Here strength takes the form of a hand holding someone who lingers and bringing him out; Daniel’s touch makes that same root feel like support you can feel.
