King James wording
King James Version
But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.THE KEY
The revelation passes through Daniel for another’s understanding; it is not proof that he stands above others.
THE MEANING
When something hidden becomes clear through you, that clarity does not prove you are superior to anyone else. Disclosure serves the one who needs understanding and brings the thoughts of the heart into view. The insight passes through a person; it does not become that person’s rank.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that unusual insight proves you are wiser or more deserving than other people; the disclosure is for another’s sake.
THE ROOT
גְּלִי
gelî
GROWS FROM
גלי
To uncover or bring into view; this Aramaic root is cognate with Hebrew גלה.
Daniel 2:30 is written in Aramaic, and גְּלִי describes the secret as uncovered to him. The language presents revelation as what becomes visible, not as something Daniel manufactures or owns.
ALSO GROWS
gelî: Revealed, uncovered
גְּלִי
This is the form used in the verse: the secret is made visible to Daniel.
gilluy: Disclosure, revelation
גִּלּוּי
This Hebrew cognate carries the same uncovering family into the noun for disclosure.
חָכְמָה
ḥokhmāh
GROWS FROM
חכם
To be wise or skillful in judgment.
Wisdom is present, but Daniel refuses to treat it as a greater personal possession than anyone else has. The root family names a capacity; the verse separates that capacity from the source and purpose of the revelation.
ALSO GROWS
ḥākām: A wise or skillful person
חָכָם
The related word names a person known for wisdom, the very status Daniel declines to claim as the reason for the disclosure.
ḥākham: To become wise or act wisely
חָכַם
The verb shows wisdom as an activity or capacity, rather than a measure of someone’s superiority.
לִבְבָךְ
libbākh
GROWS FROM
לבב
The heart or inward center where thought and intention take shape.
The verse joins the king’s thoughts to his heart, locating his inner reasoning in the center of the person. What is disclosed reaches beyond information about a dream and brings that inward movement into view.
ALSO GROWS
levav: Heart, inner person
לְבָב
This Hebrew form shares the doubled root consonant and preserves the sense of an inward center.
libbākh: Your heart
לִבְבָךְ
The Aramaic form in the verse makes the hidden thoughts personal: they belong to the king’s own inward life.
THE PATTERN
What is hidden becomes visible as a gift for another’s understanding, not as a badge of the revealer’s superiority.
But there is a God in heaven who uncovers hidden things, and makes known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, are these. For the Lord GOD does nothing, unless he uncovers his secret to his servants the prophets. In that season Jesus answered, and said, I give thanks to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have covered these things from the wise and the discerning, and have uncovered them to the infants.THE THREAD
But there is a God in heaven who uncovers hidden things, and makes known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, are these.Daniel 2:28 uses the same Aramaic root גלי for revealeth that appears in this verse’s revealed. The earlier verse names God as the revealer; this verse shows Daniel carrying that disclosure to the king.
