This verse in the King James

King James wording
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.

The head of gold is not the source of its own power: its rule has been given into its hand.

When power rests in your hands, over people, creatures, or shared life, it is real, yet entrusted rather than self-originating. The image makes a ruler the head of a larger body of rule: foremost, but still only one part of a structure beyond himself.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that reaching the top makes power self-owned and absolute.

וְהַשְׁלְטָךְ

wəhašləṭāḵ

GROWS FROM

ש־ל־ט

sh-l-ṭ

To rule or exercise authority.

The Aramaic root names both the act of ruling and the dominion a ruler holds. Here, that authority is explicitly given, so the ruler’s power is real but received.

ALSO GROWS

šallîṭ: Ruler; one who has authority.

שָׁלִיט

The same root describes the person who exercises rule, showing that “ruler” names a role carried by its holder.

šoltān: Dominion; authority.

שָׁלְטָן

Daniel 4:3 uses this related noun for dominion, linking the ruler in this verse to the authority he holds.

רֵאשָׁא

rēšā

GROWS FROM

ר־א־שׁ

r-ʾ-š

Head; by extension, chief or first.

The word carries both the bodily head and the position of precedence. Calling the ruler the image’s head makes political hierarchy a body: he is foremost, yet remains one part of the whole.

ALSO GROWS

rōʾš: Head; chief.

רֹאשׁ

This Hebrew cognate carries the same movement from the top of the body to the one who leads.

rēʾšît: Beginning; first.

רֵאשִׁית

The related word for beginning shows how “head” can also name what comes first in an order.

Authority over living beings is entrusted within a larger order, rather than originating in the one who holds it.

And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Bear fruit and multiply, and fill the earth, and tread it under your foot, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the winged of the heavens, and over every living thing that creeps upon the earth."
Genesis 1:28 · SDVDominion over living beings is given as a place within creation’s order.
You make him rule over the works of your hands; you place all things under his feet.
Psalm 8:6 · SDVThe psalm describes dominion as something placed in human hands, not made by them.
Let every living soul place itself under the authorities that hold above. For there is no authority except under God, and the ones that are have been arranged under God.
Romans 13:1 · SDVEven the powers that govern people are described as deriving their authority from beyond themselves.
And dominion was given to him, and weight, and a kingdom, so that all peoples, nations, and tongues should serve him. His dominion is a dominion of ages, which shall not be moved away, and his kingdom which shall not be destroyed.
Daniel 7:14 · SDV

Daniel 7:14 uses the same Aramaic root ⁨ש־ל־ט⁩ (sh-l-ṭ, rule) in the word for “dominion.” The repeated root opens a distinction: authority can be placed in a ruler’s hand, while the vision also speaks of a dominion that does not pass away.
