What Does Daniel 3:27 Mean?

And the great ones, the governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power. Not a hair of their head was singed, their coats were not changed, and the smell of fire had not passed on them.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.

The fire surrounds them, yet it has no rule over them, not enough to leave even a trace.

The verse holds nearness and dominion apart: the men are within the fire’s reach, but the fire has no power over their bodies. Their hair and garments remain unchanged, and not even the smell of fire rests on them. The threat leaves no mark.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that contact with danger proves that danger has prevailed: here the men stand within the fire’s reach without bearing its mark.

שְׁלֵט

shəlēṭ

GROWS FROM

שלט

To rule, have power, or hold sway.

The Aramaic verb ⁨שְׁלֵט⁩ (shəlēṭ, have power) says more than that the fire fails to burn them: it says the fire does not rule them. The same root gives ⁨שָׁלְטָן⁩ (sholtan, dominion), making the contrast one of mastery, the fire is present, but its claim to rule their bodies fails.

ALSO GROWS

sholtan: Dominion, rule, authority.

שָׁלְטָן

In Daniel 4:3, this noun names dominion that endures from generation to generation; here, the fire is denied dominion over the men.

shallit: One who has power; a ruler.

שָׁלִיט

This branch names the one who holds authority, not just the force itself; the verse denies fire that position over their bodies.

A destructive force can be present without gaining power to mark or destroy the one it reaches.

When you cross through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not kindle upon you.
Isaiah 43:2 · SDVThe fire is crossed without being allowed to burn or kindle upon the one who walks through it.
The LORD watches over you from all harm; he watches over your living soul.
Psalm 121:7 · SDVPreservation means evil does not get final rule over the person it threatens.
Pursued, but not left behind; thrown down, but not perishing.
2 Corinthians 4:9 · SDVThe force of persecution reaches the person, but it does not complete its work of destruction.
How great are his signs! How mighty are his wonders! His governance is a governance of the ages, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
Daniel 4:3 · SDV

The Aramaic root ⁨שלט⁩ (sh-l-ṭ) appears here in ⁨שְׁלֵט⁩ (shəlēṭ, have power) and there in ⁨שָׁלְטָן⁩ (sholtan, dominion). Fire is present in Daniel 3:27, yet it does not hold sway; enduring dominion belongs to the one named in Daniel 4:3.
