King James wording
King James Version
The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:THE KEY
The tree is not merely tall: its height and visibility together make it a world-sized presence, rising to heaven and reaching the earth’s far edge.
THE MEANING
The image presents growth as a presence that becomes impossible to overlook: it rises heavenward and is visible to the whole earth. Its scale fills the horizon, yet the verse does not call that greatness good or lasting.
THE ROOT
רוּמֵהּ
rûmēh
GROWS FROM
רום
Rise, be high, or be elevated.
The Aramaic word for “height” carries the Semitic root רום (rûm, rise or be high). Its branches hold height and the act of raising together: the tree’s reach is not just a measurement, but a rising presence that occupies the view.
ALSO GROWS
rām: High, elevated.
רָם
This Hebrew form from רום shows the tree’s height as a quality of elevation.
hērîm: Raised, lifted up.
הֵרִים
This causative form from רום links being high with the act of raising something into height.
mārôm: Height, high place.
מָרוֹם
This noun from רום makes the tree’s height a place or realm of elevation.
THE PATTERN
As a tree grows beyond itself, its reach becomes a world others can see or inhabit.
And he becomes like a tree planted by the channels of the waters, that gives its fruit in its season; its leaf does not wither; whatever he does, he breaks through. All the birds of the heavens nested in his boughs, and under his branches all the beasts of the field bore their young, and under his shadow settled all great nations.Which is indeed the smallest of all seeds; but when it has grown, it is the greatest of the garden plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.THE THREAD
And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower with its head in the heavens; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered across the face of the whole earth. Both images join a height reaching heaven with a presence extending across the earth. The tower is built to make a name and resist scattering, sharpening the tree’s immense scale into a picture of one presence occupying the whole field.
