What Does Daniel 5:21 Mean?
And he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. King James wording
King James Version
And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.THE KEY
A throne does not make its occupant the source of rule; the Most High rules the kingdom and appoints its human ruler.
THE MEANING
The heart becomes like the beasts, the body is exposed to the dew, and grass is his food: the loss of human standing is total. Recognition comes when he knows that the Most High rules human kingdoms and appoints their holders. Human authority is real, but received rather than self-originating.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that holding the throne makes its occupant sovereign. The verse names the Most High as ruler and human officeholders as those he appoints.
THE ROOT
יְהָקֵם
yehaqem
GROWS FROM
קום
q-w-m
rise, stand; in a causative form, raise or establish
“gives” in this verse is yehaqem. The verb carries the sense of causing someone to stand or be established. The holder of the kingdom stands in a place granted by another, rather than originating that authority himself.
ALSO GROWS
qum: To rise or stand.
קוּם
The verse’s appointed ruler is made to stand over the kingdom.
heqim: To cause to stand; to raise or establish.
הֵקִים
This branch makes the appointment concrete: the ruler’s position is established by the Most High.
שַׁלִּיט
shalit
GROWS FROM
שׁלט
sh-l-ṭ
rule, exercise dominion or authority
“ruled” in this verse is shalit. This root names rule as dominion held or exercised. The verse places that dominion with the Most High while locating human rulers inside the kingdom he governs.
ALSO GROWS
sholtan: Dominion or ruling power.
שָׁלְטָן
The related noun names the authority the verse assigns to the Most High.
shalit: Having power or dominion.
שַׁלִּיט
The form in the verse directly attributes rule to God.
יְדַע
yedaʿ
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
know, perceive
“perceived” in this verse is yedaʿ. Here knowing is recognition, not simply possession of information: the turning point comes when he perceives who rules. The verse links that perception to seeing that authority’s source lies beyond the person occupying the throne.
ALSO GROWS
yadaʿ: To know or perceive.
יָדַע
This is the knowing named in the verse: recognition of the Most High’s rule.
daʿat: Knowledge or understanding.
דַּעַת
This branch shows knowing as a formed understanding, not just hearing a claim.
THE PATTERN
Human power has real effects, but its authority and placement remain under God’s rule.
For the governance is the LORD's, and he rules among the nations. The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as channels of waters; he bends it wherever he delights.which he will show in his own seasons, the flourishing and only Mighty One, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;THE THREAD
And at the edge of the days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my perception returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives for the ages, whose dominion is a dominion of the ages, and whose kingdom is from generation to generation.Daniel 4:34 uses the same Aramaic root שׁלט (sh-l-ṭ) in שָׁלְטָן (sholtan), meaning dominion, and names that dominion as belonging to the Most High. Daniel 5:21 brings that same rule into human affairs: the kingdom has a human holder, but God establishes its rulers.
