King James wording
King James Version
Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.THE KEY
Belshazzar dresses Daniel in the symbols of ascent while his own kingdom’s fall has already been spoken.
THE MEANING
Power can recognize truth without controlling its consequences. The ruler places visible rank on Daniel after Daniel has named the kingdom’s end; the honor is real, but it cannot reverse the verdict. The signs show who is honored, not what the kingdom can secure.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that a ruler’s ability to grant rank means he controls what happens next. Belshazzar can honor Daniel without undoing the verdict on the kingdom.
THE ROOT
וְהַלְבִּשׁוּ
wehalbishu
GROWS FROM
ל־ב־שׁ
l-b-sh
To clothe or put on a garment.
“clothed” in this verse is wehalbishu. The Aramaic verb shares its three-letter root with Hebrew words for clothing and garments. English can make this seem like decoration; the root shows honor being put onto Daniel’s body as a public covering, even while the kingdom beneath that honor is failing.
ALSO GROWS
levush: Garment, clothing.
לְבוּשׁ
This noun from the same root gives the act of clothing a visible form: Daniel’s new status is something the court can see on him.
malbush: Attire, clothing.
מַלְבּוּשׁ
This related word keeps the root’s focus on what is worn; here, the garment helps make a decree of rank publicly legible.
THE PATTERN
Clothing makes a person’s standing visible, whether it carries honor, restoration, or mockery.
And the Great House took the ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph's hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and put a chain of gold about his neck.I will exult greatly in the LORD; my living soul shall leap in my God; for he has clothed me in garments of deliverance, he has wrapped me in the robe of alignment, as a bridegroom dons a headdress, and as a bride binds on her jewels. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.THE THREAD
And the Great House took the ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph's hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and put a chain of gold about his neck.Joseph receives clothing and a gold chain from a ruler after interpreting what the ruler cannot see for himself. The shared root לבש (labash, to clothe) makes his investiture echo Daniel’s, while the surrounding verdict reveals what these symbols cannot secure: Belshazzar’s kingdom still falls.
