King James wording
King James Version
Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.THE KEY
The “winds” and the body’s breath are one ruach: what moves invisibly within also moves visibly across the deep.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks to the moment when pressure gathers before its effects take form: invisible movement already troubles the surface. The winds contend with the great sea, making upheaval visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that upheaval begins at the surface: what appears in the sea is set in motion by forces moving over it.
THE ROOT
רוּחֵי
ruchei
GROWS FROM
רוח
r-w-ḥ
Wind, breath; air moving across the open or within a living body.
“breaths” in this verse is ruchei. Here the Aramaic plural names winds, while the same word elsewhere names breath. English separates these scenes, but ruach holds them together: unseen movement within and over the world.
ALSO GROWS
ruach: Breath; wind.
רוּחַ
The singular Hebrew form carries the same range as Daniel’s Aramaic plural, joining moving air over the sea with breath within a body.
rucha: Wind; breath.
רוּחָא
This Aramaic singular form sits behind the verse’s plural winds, keeping their movement within the same breath-word.
THE PATTERN
What cannot be seen becomes legible through the waters it moves.
And the earth was unshaped and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the breath of God was fluttering over the face of the waters. For he says, and raises the breath of the storm, and it lifts its waves. And waking, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Be silent. Be muzzled. And the wind wore itself out, and a great calm came.THE THREAD
And the earth was unshaped and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the breath of God was fluttering over the face of the waters.Daniel’s “winds” and Genesis’s “Spirit” render the same word, ruach, with both passages placing it over the waters. The word holds wind and breath together across scenes of movement over the deep.
