King James wording
King James Version
Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.THE KEY
This kingdom does not merely rule the earth; it makes the whole earth its meal, its threshing floor, and its fragments.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks to how power is recognized by what it does to the world within its reach: it consumes, tramples, and breaks what lies before it. Domination turns the earth into material for its appetite, then crushes what it has taken.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a kingdom’s difference is merely a new style of leadership: this verse measures that difference by a reach that consumes and pulverizes the whole earth.
THE ROOT
תֵּאכֻל
tēʾkhul
GROWS FROM
אכל
ʾ-k-l
eat, consume
“eat” in this verse is tēʾkhul. The Aramaic word grows from the ordinary root for eating, so “devour” carries the sense of appetite, not merely victory. The whole earth becomes what this kingdom takes in.
ALSO GROWS
ʾākhal: to eat
אָכַל
The familiar Hebrew verb makes the root’s concrete sense visible: the kingdom relates to the earth as something to consume.
maʾăkhāl: food, something eaten
מַאֲכָל
This branch names what the verb produces: the earth is treated as the kingdom’s food.
וּתְדוּשִׁנַּהּ
utədūšinnāh
GROWS FROM
דושׁ
d-w-sh
thresh, tread grain to separate it
“thresh it” in this verse is utədūšinnāh. The word carries the action of threshing: trampling grain to separate and process it. The kingdom’s rule becomes a threshing action upon the earth, following its consuming reach.
ALSO GROWS
dāsh: he threshes
דָּשׁ
This form shows the root’s direct physical action: trampling grain underfoot.
tidshū: you thresh
תִּדְשׁוּ
The same root appears in a plural form for threshing, keeping the image of crushing pressure beneath the kingdom’s rule.
וְתַדְּקִנַּהּ
wetaddəqinnah
GROWS FROM
דקק
d-q-q
crush fine, pulverize
“crush it” in this verse is wetaddəqinnah. The root reaches beyond breaking into the reduction of something to fine pieces. It appears again in Daniel 2:35, where what is broken becomes chaff that the wind carries away; the shared root links the visions through the image of pulverizing.
ALSO GROWS
daq: fine, thin
דַּק
This Hebrew branch describes what has been reduced to a fine state, sharpening the force of “break it in pieces.”
nədaqqū: they were broken in pieces
נְדַקּוּ
This Aramaic form appears in Daniel 2:35, linking the crushing here to the statue’s shattering there.
THE PATTERN
Imperial power turns the world it reaches into material to consume, trample, or break.
And the fourth governance shall be strong as iron, since iron breaks in pieces and subdues all things, and like iron that breaks all these, so it shall break in pieces and crush. And they shall eat your harvest and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat. They shall eat your flocks and your herds. They shall eat your vines and your fig trees. They shall dispossess your fenced cities, upon which you lean your full weight, with the sword. And it is given to him to fight with the set-apart ones and to overcome them, and authority is given to him over every kindred, and tongue, and nation.THE THREAD
Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors, and the breath carried them away, so that no place was found for them. And the stone that struck the likeness became a great mountain and filled all the earth.Daniel 2:35 uses the same Aramaic root דקק (d-q-q), meaning “crush fine,” for what happens when the statue is broken apart. The shared word links the visions through one image of pulverizing, while the stone’s rise to fill the earth turns that image toward a different ending.
