King James wording
King James Version
So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.THE KEY
Understanding is spoken into the moment your body is on the ground; the vision does not wait for you to feel composed.
THE MEANING
When the sight overwhelms you, understanding is still being spoken to you: fear and collapse do not cancel the address. The verse names you as a human of the ground and calls you to discern what is being shown at the edge of its appointed time.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this loosens is that being afraid or overwhelmed means you cannot receive what is true; the call to understand comes while the speaker is still describing fear and collapse.
THE ROOT
הָבֵן
hāḇēn
GROWS FROM
ב־י־ן
b-y-n
Discern, distinguish, understand.
The command carries the sense of discerning, seeing how things relate and differ. English “understand” can sound like collecting information; this root points to perception that distinguishes what the vision means.
ALSO GROWS
bên: Between; the space or distinction between things.
בֵּין
The shared root links understanding with discerning what stands between or differs.
binah: Understanding; discernment.
בִּינָה
This noun names the kind of perception the messenger calls forth.
mevin: One who discerns or understands.
מֵבִין
The same root describes the person who can distinguish what is being shown.
בֶּן־אָדָם
ben-adam
GROWS FROM
א־ד־ם
ʾ-d-m
Ground, soil; humanity associated with the ground.
“son of man” in this verse is ben-adam. The address names an אָדָם (adam, human) as an earth-being linked to אֲדָמָה (adamah, ground). The one asked to discern is also the one lying face-down on the ground.
ALSO GROWS
adamah: Ground, soil.
אֲדָמָה
The word shares its consonants with אָדָם, linking the human being with the ground.
adam: Human; the ground-being.
אָדָם
This is the human named in the address בֶּן־אָדָם (ben-adam, son of man).
הֶחָזוֹן
he-chazon
GROWS FROM
ח־ז־ה
ḥ-z-h
See, behold, perceive.
חָזוֹן (chazon, vision) shares its root with the act of seeing and with the seer. The English noun can make the vision sound separate from perception; the Hebrew keeps sight and what is seen connected.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāzāh: To see, behold, perceive.
חָזָה
This verb carries the act of seeing within the noun “vision.”
ḥōzeh: A seer; one who perceives.
חֹזֶה
The related word names the one who sees, connecting the vision to its perceiver.
THE PATTERN
Understanding opens through what is given and spoken, even when the hearer is overwhelmed.
But there is a breath in man, and the breathing of the Almighty makes them discern. For the LORD gives wisdom; out of his mouth come knowledge and discernment. Then he threw open their minds, so that they might put the writings together.THE THREAD
At the beginning of your pleas a word went out, and I have come to declare it to you, for you are greatly desired. Therefore discern the word, and discern the vision."Daniel 9:23 repeats הָבֵן (hāḇēn, understand) from the root ב־י־ן (b-y-n, discern) and pairs it with חָזוֹן (chazon, vision). The same pairing shows discernment meeting what is seen, so the vision becomes something to consider.
