King James wording
King James Version
Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.THE KEY
The same Hebrew root turns “set me upright” into “made me stand on my standing”, the return to uprightness comes through contact, not self-command.
THE MEANING
You can be face down and unable to bring yourself upright; the touch reaches you there and sets you back on your feet. The standing is given while you are still coming out of deep sleep, so your return does not begin with your own command.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being unable to rise does not mean you must first become alert and capable before help can reach you; here, the restoring touch comes while the speaker is still sunk in sleep.
THE ROOT
נִרְדַּמְתִּי
nirdamti
GROWS FROM
רדם
to sink into deep sleep, to be overcome by sleep
“sunk in deep sleep” in this verse is nirdamti. The verb presents deep sleep as a state that overtakes the speaker, not a rest he chooses. This root also names a suspended state in which change can unfold while the sleeper is not directing it.
ALSO GROWS
tardemah: deep sleep
תַּרְדֵּמָה
The same root names Adam’s deep sleep in Genesis 2:21, where change unfolds while he sleeps.
nirdemu: they fell into a deep sleep
נִרְדְּמוּ
Psalm 76:6 uses the root for those overcome by sleep, emphasizing how completely the state can take hold.
וַיַּעֲמִידֵנִי
vayya'amideni
GROWS FROM
עמד
to stand, remain, or take one’s stand
“stood me upright” in this verse is vayya'amideni. The causative form means “he made me stand,” and the verse follows it with עַל־עָמְדִי (al-amdi, “upon my standing”). English compresses that repeated standing into “set me upright”; Hebrew keeps the focus on a posture restored through another’s action.
ALSO GROWS
omed: standing; one who stands
עֹמֵד
This branch makes standing a posture the speaker is returned to.
amud: pillar; that which stands
עַמּוּד
A pillar gives the root’s standing a sense of stability, echoing the posture the speaker receives.
וַיִּגַּע־בִּי
vayyiga-bi
GROWS FROM
נגע
to touch, reach, or come into contact
“touched” in this verse is vayyiga-bi. The root names contact itself; its context determines whether contact wounds or restores. Here the touch comes while the speaker is in deep sleep and is followed by his return to standing.
ALSO GROWS
naga: to touch or reach
נָגַע
This is the action in the verse: contact reaches the speaker before he is standing again.
nega: a blow, plague, or affliction
נֶגַע
The same root can name harmful contact, while this verse shows contact that restores posture.
THE PATTERN
Contact reaches a person in incapacity, and what follows is restored capacity, standing, service, or cleanness.
And, behold, a hand touched me, and shook me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. And he touched it to my mouth, and said, Look, this has touched your lips, and your crookedness turns aside, and your falling short is covered. And he came and took her by the hand, and raised her up, and straightway the burning released her, and she served them.THE THREAD
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs and shut the flesh in its place. The same root, רדם (radam, to sink into deep sleep), names the suspended state in both verses. In Genesis 2:21, change unfolds while Adam sleeps; here, contact brings the speaker from that state into an upright posture. The shared root opens deep sleep as a state in which transformation can arrive without the sleeper initiating it.
