King James wording
King James Version
At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.THE KEY
The word going out as the asking begins is also the very matter you are given to understand.
THE MEANING
As your supplication begins, the word is already going forth, and understanding meets you within the asking. You are addressed as precious, and the word arriving is the matter you are given to discern; the vision is not detached from the words that make it intelligible. The verse holds being treasured and receiving clarity together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that you must first become worthy before insight can come: the verse names you precious before it calls you to understand.
THE ROOT
דָּבָר
dābār
GROWS FROM
ד־ב־ר
Speak; word, matter, or thing.
The same Hebrew noun, דָּבָר (dābār, word or matter), appears where the KJV has “commandment” and again where it has “matter.” What goes out as a word at the beginning of supplication is the very matter to be understood: the word and its subject share one name.
ALSO GROWS
dibbēr: He spoke; to speak.
דִּבֵּר
This verbal form shows the speaking held inside דָּבָר (dābār, word or matter): what goes forth is spoken, not abstract.
dibbūr: Speech or utterance.
דִּבּוּר
This branch makes the spoken quality explicit: the matter Daniel is to understand arrives as an utterance.
חֲמוּדוֹת
ḥămūdōt
GROWS FROM
ח־מ־ד
Desire, take pleasure in, or find precious.
“Greatly beloved” carries the shade of being precious or deeply desired, from חָמַד (ḥāmad, to desire or find precious). The verse names this preciousness before calling for understanding, holding clarity within a relationship of being valued.
ALSO GROWS
ḥemdāh: A precious or desirable thing.
חֶמְדָּה
This form makes the sense of “beloved” concrete: what is treasured is precious.
neḥmād: Desirable or pleasing.
נֶחְמָד
This branch echoes the verse’s description of the reader as deeply valued.
וּבִין
ūvīn
GROWS FROM
ב־י־ן
Discern, distinguish, understand.
“discern” in this verse is ūvīn. English gives two actions, “understand” and “consider,” but Hebrew repeats the same root in both clauses. The verse presents one sustained act of discernment, attending to the matter and the vision together.
ALSO GROWS
bīnāh: Understanding or discernment.
בִּינָה
This noun names the quality the repeated commands call forth.
bēn: Between; among.
בֵּין
The sense of distinction illuminates discernment: understanding recognizes what is between or within the matter and the vision.
THE PATTERN
The answer meets the cry as it begins, so asking and response occupy the same moment.
And it shall be, before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will hear and respond. In the day I cry out, you answer me, and you stir me with strength in my living soul.Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.THE THREAD
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path. The Hebrew דָּבָר (dābār, word or matter) appears here as “word,” the same word that goes forth and becomes the matter to understand in Daniel. The psalm shows this word as light for the path, revealing how what arrives in the moment of asking can also make the way discernible.
